snow covered trees

Last spring I received five sapling evergreens. They grew like crazy in pots on my deck all summer. We planted them in the fall around the outside edge of my property. They are covered in snow. Will they survive totally buried like that??? What's your best educated guess? It will be another few weeks before I can even find them.

No problem, as long as they're species adapted to the local climate.

its a little late now.. to worry about it.. lol ...

as noted.. if zone appropriate.. they will be fine.. in fact.. most likely... better off than if exposed to your version of a miserable winter ...

INSURE that when the pots are exposed.. that the pot itself receives NO SUN on it.. you do NOT want the roots super-heating.. and thawing.. before the tree above does ... or you will get root rot ...

i wouldnt be surprised that in the snow.. they arent a z5 equivalent... most winter problems involve winter sun.. and winter winds.. which you plants were not exposed too .. go figure on that

and this presumes.. the snow fell naturally. rather than you piling it on top .. which might cause breakage...

Whaas... check this out: http://raws.wrh.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/roman/raws_ca_monitor.cgi?rawsflag=290&state=MKX&type=0amp;orderby=e&day1=3&month1=1&year1=2012&hour1=21&timeobs=12 Local station reports around your area. On the 24-hour column you can see how low it got. The lowest I see is 25. Most places were warmer. Hard for weather.com or accuweather.com to report lower than the data they get. Anyway, the Federal Government (National Weather Service) issues Freeze Warnings, not the commercial weather companies (weather.com is The Weather Channel and accuweather.com is AccuWeather, Inc). So they aren't covering for themselves. Its possible you live in an unusually cold location. Also, thermometer placement makes a difference... its usually several degrees colder right at the ground level as opposed to 5 feet above ground level. Standard thermometer height is 5 feet.

Hi Nick, gorgeous photo, you really captured the sparkle of the ice nicely. Your photo is 234 kbs, though, and that's going to be a lot for dial-up surfers to wait to download, you might want to try Irfanview to resize some so more people can enjoy it. For those, like me, who have small, old monitors, you can drag the picture into your status bar and IE will resize it so that you can see the whole picture at the same time. HTH!

That's a beautiful viburnum in the above post! I am trying to landscape for wildlife in my yard, and this has been such a useful thread! So far, in my yard, a large holly seems to be the "favorite" of most wildlife. The birds use it for shelter year round, and it comes alive with bees in the spring when it flowers. Much of the recent plantings I have made (I only moved into my current house ~3 years ago) haven't been super succesful in attracting wildlife. I suspect the problem is that my yard is in the midst of a suburban residential area that almost entirely consists of manicured, empty green lawns. Maybe my lone yard, diversely planted as it is becoming, just isn't enough attraction for most wildlife? Birds in particular seem few and far between, though I do notice a variety of bees and other pollinators in the spring. Sadly, my neighbor just cleared out all the undergrowth and brush in a small patch of woods on his property because, as he told me, he was "afraid of snakes." I am worried that the brush pile I am trying to create on my own property will not last long...the folks in this neighborhood like to complain about any landscaping that deviates from the manicured norm. Thanks everyone for the nice comments on my little snow family.Phonegirl and Anjabee I pulled up the states of Utah and Montana, and y'all have some beautiful scenery!!! Hard to believe it is snowing already, here in the South we won't have any for awhile if at all. Sometimes it doesn't snow all winter.please show your pumpkins when you get them painted. Thanks for the hope. Now to see if they like their new home. I am counting on the arbor society to not sell/give away plants that won't survive/aren't hardy, in a given area, but I maybe expecting too much. The snow is half gone now, and I haven't seen any trees peaking out yet...They are no longer in pots. I planted them in the ground last fall.The winter really wasn't so terrible. More snow then most, but rather mild for us really.

Do you know the name of these evergreens? Some tolerate snow loads and shed the excess ... others will not and will splaying to the ground.

When they become exposed stake them and wrap with stretch tape, available at your local nursery, to bring them back into uniformity. I would probably care for them in that fashion till they develop some size. Prune out all multi-leader plants...keeping the strongest leader to grow on.

Certainly a person should know what they are, especially after babying them in pots on the patio all summer. This same person should have documented the type, and date planted and where abouts on the property but some how last year was not conducive to such organization. I will have to wait and see if they spring back, I guess. They went from seedlings to about two feel tall from April to October. They were a short needle variety. Very possibly blue spruces...

From what I've read of this organisation, not something that can be relied on completely!!

I found them, they are standing proud. So far so good!

What I remember from my college geology class is pine trees are not native to MN. They do not naturalize, their saplings cannot make it through the first winter. What I don't know is how old they have to be before they can survive. I assume it varies. I don't know how old the one's I started were...

You should be fine at this point. Give them a little drink this year, sparingly, if necessary.

Excuse me if I'm missing something, "pine trees are not native to MN?" What's the state tree?

You "might" have been having a little too much fun in school;^)

White pine, red pine, and jack pine are assuredly Minnesota natives! As are white spruce, black spruce, balsam fir, and hemlock, pine-family members all.
