Comments (25)Clement, that a nice and very tight Picea omorika broom. It seems that there are several 'Fuchs' brooms and they all have a number. Which number belongs to this broom? Here is a link that might be useful: brooms...See MorePicea engelmannii Gallery 2011
Comments (11)I really like the Picea engelmannii group. Somehow I've got it in my head that they work better in the Northwest than do the Picea pungens. With that said, here's my offering. Picea engelmannii 'Snake' Open, twisting and bizarre. I like that in a spruce. a closeup of a branch. This tree is growing in an area I named, Mutants of the Northwest. The snake actually appears to be growing out of a Thuja plicata 'Gruene Kugel.' Here's something unusual. Normally this tree rarely branches and occasionally a branch will not form a bud for the following year. If that happens the branch will die. Here we have quite the opposite. The end of this stubby branch has 9 buds. Maybe the start of a broom? Maybe a reversion? Time will tell. My hope is for a snakey broom. That would be fun. ~Dave...See More2010 New Additions photo gallery(third installment)
Comments (35)Pinus strobus 'Horsham' x 'Contorta' is a cross between 2 Pinus strobus cultivars for what is now: Pinus strobus 'Tiny Kurls (renamed by Bob Fincham) aka Pinus strobus 'Vercurve' (renamed by Talon Buchholz) aka Pinus strobus 'Contorta Small' aka Pinus strobus 'Curly Globe 2' Greg Williams was the founder of this cross but gave propagation material to several U.S. nurserymen without given a proper cultivar name in front, so several names were given for the same plant...this is not the way it should be....See MorePinus mugo photo gallery 2011
Comments (32)It'll be a certain amount of fingers crossed for the rest of this winter and throughout the summer. The mix couldn't be improved to absolute perfection, time & money preclude that. So it's like the best 4 star insurance. I can't stop it raining or cover all the pots so that will have to be; drought is more manageable but the risk of overwatering in the event won't be more dangerous than the rain. Rapid drying out of the top few inches could catch me out, the containers are already mulched well for frost so that will work out. Monitoring the weather for a hot spring (again) will be important. I can water everything in 20 mins before work so no excuse to be caught out. I see no reason to be pessimistic, the possible loss of one or two fussy ones will always make gaps that don't stay gaps long ; )...See More- 13 years ago
