“Women in the Dirt: Landscape Architects Shaping Our World”

If you’re lucky enough to be on the sandy shores of San Diego, check out “Women in the Dirt,” a documentary by director Carolann Stoney highlighting the work of seven award-winning women making their mark in landscape architecture. Featured professionals include Mia Lerher, Andrea Cochran, Cheryl Barton, Isabelle Greene, Katherine Spitz, Pamela Palmer, and Lauren Melendrez. Although each landscape architect has a unique body of work, their concerns overlap in the realm of sustainability and enduring design.

The Junior League of San Francisco is partnering with Dwell Media to present “Modernism Through the Ages," an interactive lab giving you the opportunity to be inspired by the union of classic San Francisco architecture with modern and contemporary design. This prominent fundraiser will let you tour a collection of private homes throughout the Sea Cliff neighborhood, and feature 20 hand-selected local designers and manufacturers who collaborated on transforming an unfinished penthouse. The team includes Kendall Wilkinson Design & Home, William Duff Architecture, Barbara Scavullo Design, Reba Jones of Butler Armsden, Michael Merrill Design, Min Day Architecture, Tres McKinney Design, and more.

Bay Area native Richard Serra is known for celebrated and groundbreaking bodies of work in both sculpture and drawing. Interact with two of his new impressive and large-scale sculptures Junction (2011) and Cycle (2010), on display at the Gagosian Gallery.
Serra has pushed the sculptural syntax he developed over the last 15 years to arrive at these two new forms — his most complex and challenging works to date. Serra has produced large-scale site-specific sculptures for architectural, urban and landscape settings spanning the globe, from Iceland to New Zealand.

The urban, open-air market held on historic Treasure Island in San Francisco showcases local designers, collectors, makers, artists, crafters, specialty food purveyors and local wineries. Entertainment is also provided, although it is entertaining enough to marvel at the unexpected and unusual antique just waiting to make its way into your home. This weekend will also be a fun-filled Halloween weekend show — bring a can of food, or wear a costume and get for free.

2nd Annual Dia de los Muertos Altar Walk
Meet at Pullman State Historic Site

A featured program of Chicago Artists Month, join in for the 2nd Annual Dia de los Muertos Altar Walk through the south Historic Pullman District. The Day of the Dead event will showcase seven historic houses, and give you the opportunity to view the homeowner's personal altars that celebrate life is embodied in the creation of an altar to a deceased loved one. The Altar Walk is sure to be colorful, intriguing, and stirring, combining works of art and memories built within historic structures. Artists include: Linda Beierle Bullen, Christopher Campagna, Dana Day (Mosnart) and Donnie Stahlke, among others. Sponsored by the Historic Pullman Garden Club and the Pullman State Historic Site.

The art and design-filled itinerary starts with a visit to Ten Willow Studio, belonging to glass artists Jill Reynolds and Dan Spitzer, then the next stop will be a guided tour of the contemporary galleries at Dia:Beacon, housed in a sprawling, old factory along the Hudson. The afternoon will wrap up with a tour of the picturesque Manitoga/ The Russel Wright Design Center, and celebrate MAD's current Crafting Modernism exhibit.

There's been plenty of design inspiration to go around in Philadelphia, with Design Philadelphia having just wrapped up. Continue to get inspired by celebrating the art of contemporary craft at the annual Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, featuring 195 of the finest and most dynamic craft artists in the U.S., selected from more than 1,400 applicants. Pick up a unique item ranging from baskets, ceramics, furniture (including a unique stool from Bradford Woodworking, above), glass, wood, and more.
Presented by the Museum's Women's Committee and Craft Show Committee for the benefit of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Funds will benefit conservation and publication projects, exhibitions, and education programs.

Autumn at the Arboretum

Pretend you're in your own fall fairy tale at the beautiful "Autumn in the Arboretum" transformation at Dallas Arboretum. Walk along garden grounds filled with 150,000 blooming flowers and foliage plantings, and more than 50,000 pumpkins, squash and gourds. Each week something new unfolds in the garden: a pumpkin village, the arrival of fall mums, the opening of the $3 million garden expansion, the Nancy Rutchik Red Maple Rill, and more.
Family Fun Weekend: On Oct. 29-30, come in costume and trick-or-treat from 12 p.m.- 4 p.m. throughout Cinderella’s Pumpkin Village and seven Fairy Tale Castles. Cinderella and her fairy tale friends will pass out treats to children ages 10 and under. Other activities include a magician, petting zoo, and face painting.
