Planned trip to GEE Farms and Blue River Nursery

hi all ...i have a bad spring conifer itch and must see and buy stuff....as if i didnt have enough already lol....anyhow...im in chicago and i plan to make a looong road trip to gee farms in michigan 4+hours then go south to blue river nursery in indiana 2+ hours then head back west home to chicago 3+ hours....question is...anyone know or been to either place and can give me a heads up about what to expect/ are they worth the trip?? Preparation tips...what not to miss/ other places along the way that i should also maybe visit since they are "on the way" ???thanks all! :) Oh and just as a reference point...how are they lets say compared to rich fox willow or lake county pines if anyone has been there? thanks again

are you dragging a uhaul ... lol ...

gees has a 10 acre arborteum, across the street and down the path.. they will drive you over if you ask ...plan at least and hour or two in the arb ... dont forget the camera ...

i would suggest.. minimum.. 6 hours there ... though they have the big stuff for sale .. they have 6 or 8 houses of one gallon pots.. but you better know what to look for ... second year grafts all look alike .. lol ... if you have a wish list and budget.. calling ahead might help ....

frankly.. 4 hrs to jackson.. 8 hours at gees.. spend the night.. next day.. the other place ... then home to chicago ... i just dont know why you would drive all the way to gee's for a 'quick' visit ...

my best suggestion.. call cary gee in advance.. tell her you plan.. introduce yourself when you get there.. and you will be given the family treatment ... show you around.. and then leave you alone ... with the size of the place.. it can be a big help ... they have a farm market.. so food is available ... but for overnight.. you will have to go back down to jackson [10 miles], because they do define 'middle of nowhere' ... lol ...

Jon, it's to bad that you didn't meet one person of the Gee family, they're realy nice persons! They have a great nursery and a huge assortment of conifers. Also their big Arboretum is very nice to visit! The nudi lady was there as well last winter. It looks to me that she's looking more happy now. I guess I would also look happier in this time of year with the same scarce cloting on ;0) My friend Gary is on his way to The Netherlands, I'll see him again tomorrow. Indeed, he's a fun guy to travel with, he's joking all the time :0)

Based on what I have seen here the blue cedar will have a stake due to a deformed rootstock being used, and the tops of the box are plenty big enough for their roots to be matted - the magnolia will not be the only one that needs work at planting. With deciduous magnolias it appears you want to be subjecting them to root damage only when they are in leaf. Otherwise they may just sit there and rot. When a potted plant has the correct proportion between top and roots the top looks undersized to many consumers. This and growers not keeping up with potting on anyway results in under-potted stock being the general situation in the retail setting. Loosening up the outside of a matted root system is not too hard to deal with; corkscrew roots, hard woody root turnips and other severe deformities in the center of the root mass, right below the crown - resulting from stock being left in bands, liners or 4" pots way too long at production facilities - is a different story, and just the thing to spoil a woody specimen after it has grown for many years and made a nice big top. Tall, fast growers like cypresses or pines may even break loose and go over, when part of the root system is caught up in going around and around - instead of all of the main roots immediately leaving the vicinity of the trunk and radiating outward to their full lengths and forming a good anchorage. I am back, but can't make the trip (granddaughter's birthday party). Definitely interested in future trips and events. I was happy to see all of the effort going into putting the e-mail list together. I think it will be more effective in communicating details of specific events than multiple postings on the garden web. Marci, still a typo on that last list (ooptonline).

thanks for the helpful hints....i tried emailing you but not sure if i did it right? lol....if i didnt u can email me at dientesinc@aol.com...im pretty open as to the when ....id like to visit when they are "fully stocked" and open??? vs sold out n clearanced out??...my schedules pretty flexible n open soooo....as for why drive so far for a quik visit...well i dunno....blame it on me being new and adventurous?lol
