Help I'm losing control!

Innocently I set out to check and see if Joy Creek still has any Huldine left so I could add it to my new trellis. Now I have 7 other Clemmies on my list. How do I choose? I have mostly viticellas and other small flowered types because I've had a bad experience with Ernest Markham wilting every year. Someone recommended the viticellas to me because of their resistance to wilt and now I've been afraid to plant the large flowered types. I do have Jackmanii, Nelly Moser and Lady Northcliffe and they don't wilt for me but still it's a hard thing to get over.

Any way, the ones I am tempted to add to the garden are the following. I'd love to hear your experience with these, comparisons of which do well for you and which ones don't really thrive (of course I will take into account different growing conditions, zones, care, etc).

I only grow Duchess of Albany, but here it is really vigorous, even planted in partial shade. I really like it.

I only have grown Piilu and Voluceau. Piilu is very compact, only about 4'tall so far for me. I have it growing in a large pot with a Northwest exposure. It has grown and bloomed very well. I've never had any disease problems with it. It blooms double and single which is nice.

Voluceau is growing in a dry shady area and is still doing well. The blossoms are very large and look like velvet. I have never had any disease problems with it. I like that one also.

If you can afford them
I would try them all. I have a very small city garden and have 60-70 clematis planted in it. You can tuck them in all over your garden. It is really easy to find places for them if you use a little imagination. You can grow them on shrub, trees, and free standing obolisks. You don't have to grow them on a fence. Calshaye - I think to identify the problem we need to see the pics of your algae and Powdery Mildew. Something doesn't ring right. Powdery mildew on perlite? I can imagine some fuzzy mold on perlite, but not PM. PM looks like somebody sprinkled your leaves with fine white powder. You will not be able to see it on perlite no matter what. If it is a fuzzy mold, not PM - it is harmless - and replacing the soil on the surface is probably the max you need to do. Algae - if you have it - no reasonable amount of Physan is going to kill it. Very concentrated Physan probably will - but your plants will be killed first. It is mostly harmless, it consumes the fertilizer to some extent and it is absolutely bad if you are trying to grow something from seeds.It will choke them. otherwise - replacing the top layer of the soil is probably the most you need to do - or just leave it alone. How much fertilizer you put in your water? What is the brand of your 7:7:7? I live in the Phoenix area and am having the same problem. Last year I lost two, well-established hibiscus (red) about this same time of the year. Those two got morning sun. It's happening all over again (also red ones) in a totally different area of the yard that gets afternoon sun. As far as watering habits, I run a drip line to the plants and water three times a day for about 7 minutes at a time. I currently have a row of six fully grown hibiscus. The one on the end has started to die first, and the one next to it is showing the same symptoms. Would this indicate the spread of a disease, as the bushes are all right next to each other? Chocolate Stripes or Green Zebra I've never liked Green Zebra as grown by me in my area and haven't grown Chocolate Stripes, which is a selection from a cross between Schimmeig and a pink. Those who list CS in the SSE Yearbook speak mainly to the unique colors and less so to taste despite the fact that it apparently was a 3rd place winner at Tomatofest in 2007. So your choice. (Should I grow purple brandy if I'm already growing Cherokee Purple?) Purple Brandy is better known as Marizol Bratka and was a selection from a cross that Joe Bratka made between Marizol Purple and Brandywine. I've grown both parents as well as the selection that Joe made. And I've grown Cherokee Purple almost from the day that John Green of TN gave the seeds to Craig LeHoullier, who named it. Many folks now prefer Indian Stripe, a version, if you will, of CP that was found in Arkansas. It's hard to make a choice here, at least it is for me. If it were me I'd grow Indian Stripe this year and maybe Marizol Bratka next year or grow both CP and Indian Stripe in the same year so you can make a direct comparison. (Anyone have good production with Malinowy Olbryzym?) I've grown several Malinowys and there are several b'c what appears to have happened is that geographic place names were attached to the pre-fix Malinowy, which translates as raspberry colored. I haven't grown the specific one you mention. The same thing is true for thge various Costolutos from Italy in terms of a place name being associated with the work Costoluto which means ribbed in Italian; C Fiorentino is from Florence, C GEnovese is from Genoa, etc. (I really appreciate it. Also, how about production on the ones that are in -Amish Oxheart,(I've read good) Grandma Viney's (it looks so cool), Granny Cantrell and Rutgers. Thanks. I think its 7 degrees outside. I'm a dedicated Heart lover but haven't grown Amish Oxheart, a KY heiloom ; only two persons list it in the 2009 SSE YEarbook and they were favorably impressed but not ecstatic. LOL There are two red hearts from KY that I have grown recently that I like a lot and those are Linnie's Oxheart and Indiana Red, both reds. Both of these varieties were from Horace Boynton of Science Hill, KY who bought the plants for Indiana Red at a nursery near Bethelridge, KY and Linnie's Oxheart he got directly from the person in whose family it had been grown for years. And yes, I've grown Rutgers but I think some of the others are more interesting these days. I have seeds for Granny Cantrell but haven't grown it out yet but many folks seem to like it very much. Too many Sassafras seedlings -- HELP -- I'm losing the battle

I appreciate this discussion, thank you for all your comments. I thought I was alone with a mystery problem. Getting rid of these sassafrass suckers or seedlings has been impossible. The roots are too deep in established beds to dig out. The later comment about an established sassafrass tree dying might be a clue as to what's going on over here. There was a really big Norway maple on the neighbor's property that they took down about 12 years ago. That's allowed a little Norway maple to flourish on our property to create a lot of shade. Also a lot of Sassafrass trees popped up on the neighbor's property, and we let one grow on our property. Ever since then the suckers come up everywhere and don't stop no matter how we slice and dice and pull out as much as we can. The little ones are sprouting up ALL OVER, by the dozens, and we've dug down 2 feet in the places where we can and we still don't get the whole root out. Use caution with sassafrass. It may be native but there are some natives that become invasive pests, and sassafrass seems to be one, along with some rudbeckia and a few others. I agree about the maples, especially if it's a Norway Maple, which are an invasive non-native. I've seen some maples here on Long Island, I think they're called swamp maples, they appear to share space with other plantings more peacefully than Norway Maples. I would never have considered round up but some compelling points are made above. Makes me wonder if the salt, vinegar and soap I spray on poison ivy leaves would work on the sassafrass suckers.. Well I grow Sizaia Ptitsa, Piilu, Duchess of Albany, and Fascination. Royal Velours was just purchased last year from Donahues so it is still in its sleep stage although it has put up a fair amount of foliage this year. Fascination is relatively new for me as well and here are its first blooms and buds this season.

I really love Duchess of Albany for its vigor. Here it is this year. Not sure if you can tell but it grows up against the wall, originally climbed the white trellis, but its vines are now sprawled out over the japanese maple and the otto luyken laurel on the right.

I love the integrifolias and integrifolia hybrids as well so Sizaia Ptitsa is a great one I would recommend.

Although not a huge fan of the type IIs, I must admit that Piilu is a great early season bloomer in my garden. I have posted pictures previously this year of mine and now it is even more covered in blooms than it was previously. As Karen pointed out it tends to be a shorter variety of clematis, but then again I treat mine as a type III clematis (which is why I never get double blooms on it) and this year it was whacked back to ground level and it is still going gangbusters and well over 5 feet tall. Mine is planted in the ground.

Oh what fabulous pictures! I knew you all would be no help narrowing the pool! I think I'll probably buy maybe 3 or 4 this round and put the others on a wish list for later. I have planted several in shrubs and trees as you suggested flowerfan2. I like this approach since we're only allowed to have 4' fences in our neighborhood and I have only a few obelisks and trellises. I will have to scope out some more planting spots this weekend and place an order. It's looking like Huldine, Piilu, Duchess of Albany and Sizaia Ptitsa for this round but I'll probably change my mind a dozen times before I place the order.
