Thanks for clarifying, Sue. If those are standard doors for a 72" space, then they are each about 36" wide, which means that, for a 60" space, you will have an opening that is at most 24" wide with the sliding door fully open. Those tracks get trimmed all the time because no opening is ever exactly the manufactured width. I don;t know the exact design of the doors and track, but cutting down the track shouldn't be a problem if the 24" opening is wide enough to get through easily (like no toilet in the way, etc.). You do need some basic handyman skills to do a decent job. And it wouldn't hurt to call Kohler customer service to make sure this modification will pose no problem. However, I'm confused why you bought a set of doors for a 72" space: Kohler manufactures doors for 60" spaces as well and this would give you a 30" wide opening, and less fooling around with the track. Why not return what you have and get a set more suited to your space?

Thanks, Rach. Here's the update to the story, some of which I believe I've posted here in the past. Hugo (as a friend named the pitbull) had a rough road. His neck got re-infected twice, and had to be re-treated. Treatment involved removing more dead skin and tissue each time. Good thing pit bulls have extra flesh around the neck! Then, Hugo got parvo virus. The vet had held off vaccinating him while his immune system was so weak, and he was still fighting off infection while his neck was healing. The parvo involved a several day stay at the emergency hospital. But he recovered. After Hugo's recovery, I had a professional behavioral assesment conducted. Hugo did pretty well, and I decided to keep him. I hired a private dog trainer to work with me and Hugo, since I had never had a dog other than miniature poodles as a kid. After several months - and about $3,000 dollars later on vet bills and training fees - I came to the conclusion that having a dog, especially a rambunctious dog like Hugo, was more than I could handle. Not only was he more than I could handle, but I realized that someone else could give him a better life than I could. I knew that I had to be very careful about who I gave Hugo to. Pit bulls are abused so often. Also, even though Hugo is a sweetheart, he is a handful. He now weighs 57 pounds of pure muscle, he's stubborn, and has a very short attention span. He chews absolutely everything. He ate through his metal crate. I knew that he'd have to go to a home where people had patience and time. Lots of love. I knew it might take me a while to find the perfect home. I sent out emails to all my animal contacts. After a week or so, I got an email back from the dog trainer who conducted Hugo's initial behavioral assessment. She knew a couple who were interested in meeting Hugo. That weekend, Hugo and I went to meet the couple and their dogs. The trainer was also on hand to facilitate introductions and to assess whether this would indeed be a good match. It went well. Hugo stayed. He now has a large fenced in yard (the fence was 4', but after Hugo jumped it a couple of times, they raised it to 6') three other dogs in his family, and dog friends nearby. Hugo has people who love him and enjoy working with him. I've visited several times, and am enjoying the open adoption "birth mother" role I'm playing. Thank you, everyone, for your support. CarrieB

You have taken on a real challenge. You are probably going to enjoy teaching these two people. Teaching can be rewarding, or it can be ... something else. Sometimes things go wrong and it can become really draining. I think it depends on the diligence of the student. When they are motivated, it doesn't seem like a chore at all. I am not a professional educator. I have simply taught many different people many different things that I know how to do. Another topic: My friend said she wanted to learn how to hand quilt. She has knitted and crocheted while I have sat next to her and hand quilted and hand appliqued. Many times. She was on vacation recently, so she was able to come to the LQS for the sit and stitch group. I thought we'd finally sit still and get down to business. I had everything ready to show her how to hand quilt. But instead, she got totally overwhelmed. She had to look at everything in the store. Then, she fell in love with a few of the samples, and said she wanted to make those. Small projects, but using completely different skills from hand quilting. She took the free instructions for these small projects. OK, she can tackle those projects AFTER she learns to hand quilt, I figured. Then she asked about classes. She bought a rotary cutter and a mat. Bottom line: We never got around to the hand quilting demo. She couldn't focus on one thing at a time. I'm not saying anyone else is necessarily going to be that way. But I did learn that sometimes, it is the teacher's job to chop off just a little piece of information, just ONE skill, and tell the student that s/he is going to learn just that one little bit before they try to learn anything else. So you might want to figure out what is the most basic skill. Start with that. Make it into a completed project. The smaller the better. Design something that doesn't take much time to make, but will teach all the necessary skills. Then proceed to something that uses those skills, plus new ones that the student can learn, a little at a time. Just an idea.

Wits End, How long will your husband be gone? So you are in a kind of emergency for advise. I lost sight of that when I wrote my previous post. Is the 21 year old trying to find new employment? So your husband is mad at you because you wouldn't let his son in to use your phone. Why wouldn't you let his son in to use the phone? Did you know that is what he wanted to do when he tried to force himself into the house? I'm not saying that you over-reacted then, or ever over-react, but some people get upset so easily and bring out the worst in the people they are around. For emergency kind of advise for you while your husband is out of town...just keep yourself busy and enjoy your children and baby. You must have plenty to do. Make up your mind that you are going to have compassion on your husband while he tries to help his son. You will be much more appreciated if you go along with your husband trying to help his son. So you can see lots wrong with the way the son has been enabled to be a kind of cripple--but that kind of discussion with your husband on the phone or with anyone else at this time should be avoided. Don't be fueling the fire inside you with thoughts of despair and reasons why you should get worried. This is a stressful time of the year--try to be easy-going. OK, every day can be a stressful day for people that don't handle problems. Your husband's son is stressful most of the time because he doesn't know how to handle problems. He lashes out and blames others for what happens and thereby is able to live with himself. It's important for your husband to help his son--he is going to do that whether you like it or not. Accept that fact. In a way, you have to know your place too. Yes, you DO have a problem, but right now it is more important that you join your husband with the spirit of cooperation.Were you living with your husband when the son was still living at home? Think about this, the son can't come and go into the home that was once his home. Think about how that might feel. Have some compassion. I don't mean that you should cater to him, just have some understanding and don't be quick to put him in his place. It is the dad's responsibility to explain some things to his son. It is the dad's place to let his son know that he cares about you and wants the two of you to enjoy a family life. The son feels somewhat rejected by your emergence--take these ideas into consideration and don't start planning what you are going to do if the son comes back home. Not yet anyway. If you are going to stay in your husband's life, then you have to accept his son the way he is. He may get help and he may not. If the father wants to help his son, then pay for his son's medicine--that would be a step in the right direction. Something absolutely very, very important--the son will need to have a doctor that he sees in order to keep getting his prescriptions, and the son will have to take this medicine thing very serious. I don't know if you know anything about being on drugs for bi-polar or some kind of mental condition, you need to get informed. Get yourself educated about bi-polar, etc. The time spent on becoming educated will be a step in the right direction. It will help you know how to help and respond. I don't have time to go on about it. Face it, you are involved and need to be educated to cope. PAY FOR THIS KID'S MEDICINE!!!
