Kohler Glass Doors purchased from Lowes

Hi All-

I could not afford to have a glass company come in to install glass doors in my renovation so I purchased Kohler Fluence Glass Doors from Lowe's. I hope I didn't make a huge mistake. I really wanted glass doors to open up the bathroom but I know that 12 inches must be cut off the track. Has anybody out there gone this route w/glass doors and if so what do I need to beware of? Any suggestions would be helpful? Also, what is the best way to keep them sparkling clean and clear??? What did I get myself into?

It's not clear what you are asking. You are talking about trimming the track. Does that mean that the doors will have more overlap than normal? Or that you are wanting to reduce the size of the glass, too (which won't be possible because it's tempered)? Some more details about what you have and what you are trying to accomplish would help.

I apologize for not making myself clear. The doors fix an enclosure up to 72" long. My tub is on 60" long so the man at Lowe's said 12" will have to be trimmed off the track but of course the glass doesn't get touched. The longer the enclosure the further the doors spread open. With a short enclosure the doors are not fully extended if that makes any sense. The track is the only part that gets trimmed.

Anyone install glass shower doors without the assistance of a glass store.

Here is the page you can put in your zip code to find dealers. I ended up getting the Starphire but couldn't get the showerguard. One local company said they "used" to order it but since you can't see it on the glass, they had all sorts of trouble with it being on the wrong side or them installing it backwards? My doors were just installed yesterday and I love the low iron glass! Now I am trying to get one of the glass coatings done-diamonfusion. I think it runs about $150 so it wouldn't have been much more to get the showerguard if it was possible. I guess it all depends on where you live. We could have ordered from about 2 hours away but we were worried that if we had a problem, it would be tough to get them back out!

@WoW Washington That makes sense. I went to your website and couldn't find a list of brands you sell. I'm looking for aluminum framed sliding windows with narrow sightlines. I'm aware of the uber luxury windows by Vitrocsa, Styline, and Skyframe, and their frames are about 1" thick. Gorgeous. But of course, the prices are as much as my entire home cost. I'm wondering if there's a narrow frame out there, maybe 2" thick, from a more economical standpoint. Milgard and Andersen are thicker than that. What brands do you sell on your site that have the narrowest frames, could you share? It's funny because I live in a old, modest beach house in Florida that JUST SO HAPPENS to have come with super narrow 1.5" frames. Even on my 6' x 5' sliding window. The frame is just 1.5" thick. Love it! But the company went out of buisness.

I went with the plain glass, i.e., not low E. I'm a happy camper. It's like having a new window. The light in my room is so utterly changed that I'll walk into the living room and think I've left the door wide open. It's everything I hoped it would be. I do have a conventional screen door that's always in place, since I like to open my door for fresh air when it's warm enough to do so. So the screen somewhat effects the light, but one's eyes adjust to that. I've ordered a custom roller shade, as I need the privacy at night. Currently I have a long piece of craft paper that I hang with blue tape every night and take down in the morning. Yesterday it was almost 100 here and the late afternoon sun was brutal. I was too lazy to put the faux shade up. Here's the difference. It will really make a difference in the winter when it's too cold to have the door open. The screen door is all screen, no glass. Quality low-profile mirrored glass doors (French and 24"wide)?

If i lose 60% of light I won't do the mirrored glass, the electric privacy roller shade will solve the problem when guests are by the pool. I am confused, my door is definitely wood, and the sill is metal. What is the best way to do the fancy thin-frame metal door sill to hardwood transaction if hardwood is installed before? People are every day changing old doors for thin frame metal doors with hardwood already installed, so what is the best way to have a nice transition on the floor? Should I tell anything to the wood installer? Should I remove that current metal frame and run the wood all the way and then cut wood to fit sill? Please suggest, thank you

Thanks for clarifying, Sue. If those are standard doors for a 72" space, then they are each about 36" wide, which means that, for a 60" space, you will have an opening that is at most 24" wide with the sliding door fully open. Those tracks get trimmed all the time because no opening is ever exactly the manufactured width. I don;t know the exact design of the doors and track, but cutting down the track shouldn't be a problem if the 24" opening is wide enough to get through easily (like no toilet in the way, etc.). You do need some basic handyman skills to do a decent job. And it wouldn't hurt to call Kohler customer service to make sure this modification will pose no problem.

However, I'm confused why you bought a set of doors for a 72" space: Kohler manufactures doors for 60" spaces as well and this would give you a 30" wide opening, and less fooling around with the track. Why not return what you have and get a set more suited to your space?
