Low iron glass for shower door

I have carrara marble for my shower. I have been told I cannot get both clear glass AND showerguard. I want the clearer glass and would like to know what others have done. Thanks!

Here is the page you can put in your zip code to find dealers. You can get both if you are lucky-the showerguard low iron glass is called ultra white I think.

There are no dealers near my town and I called almost all the glass companies and could not get both locally. I ended up getting the Starphire but couldn't get the showerguard. One local company said they "used" to order it but since you can't see it on the glass, they had all sorts of trouble with it being on the wrong side or them installing it backwards?

My doors were just installed yesterday and I love the low iron glass! Now I am trying to get one of the glass coatings done-diamonfusion. I think it runs about $150 so it wouldn't have been much more to get the showerguard if it was possible. I guess it all depends on where you live. We could have ordered from about 2 hours away but we were worried that if we had a problem, it would be tough to get them back out!

If you see my recently posted 'bling' bathroom thread, you will see that we have used white marble in the shower. To show that pure white color, we went the starphire glass. It is totally clear, no tint. you can use something like this to seal the glass http://crlaurence.com/ProductPages/T/TPC16_6695.html?Origin=

I am going to use rain X. And also squeegee..

Enduring- thanks for responding. I had seen your shower- it turned out just beautiful. I wasn't sure if in your research you'd explored a sliding glass door or not. To answer your questions. One end of the shower is on an exterior brick wall. The other is flanked by a custom linen closet surrounded by tile with the edges grouted. It's not coming out. If I had no other choice but to do doors, I'm pretty sure I'd have to remove tile on one or both ends and add the blocking- not something I'd like to do if I can avoid it. Likely I'd just have one door and a fixed panel on the other- I'm pretty sure the toilet clearance wouldn't let me do two doors like you have. Though I see your point about having a fixed panel- I can't drill into the shower pan so that wouldn't work either. Hopefully some of the glass guys can give me their opinion about using epoxy to secure clips on the bottom. Thanks again for your help- much appreciated. Lisa

Drilling through porcelainized cast iron? I use an angle grinder or something similar to first abrade/cut through the porcelain. The tool and the cutting edge depends on the surface orientation; flat, inside corner, outside corner, etc. It's a personal preferance to not drill directly upon the porcelain surface. There is no cracking/chipping/flaking of the porcelain, it simply abrades it away. Then drill through the cast iron. Hit the bare metal with epoxy or primer to seal the metal. Prevents potential rust down the road. Then attach clip. Again, a personal preference.

Get some free samples from Fireclay (although they do have a handmade vibe which might not be the look you want). I got a lot of samples from them and the only ones that were green were supposed to be green. If the samples you got look fine, then they're probably going to be fine installed. I've heard of window glass and shower stall glass being greenish but never heard of it being an issue with tile.

Starphire is a brand name for Low Iron (PPG now Vitro). The fact that a dealer is going to charge you one price for low iron and another for the same thing but the Starphire brand would make me quite skeptical. As far as whether Low Iron is a benefit, that is a personal opinion, but the tile will definitely pick up the green hue in regular glass over low iron.

pharoah, your bathroom is beautiful! We also got the starphire glass because we have white tile with silver glass accents and I am so glad we did. I just wanted to mention that I read here rain-x can turn your glass doors ORANGE! To me that would be worse than green and although I had every intention of using it, that made me change my mind.

So, I just had diamonfusion come out this morning and do our door and it was only $150. They did my glass sink and waterfall faucet too. It took him about 2 hours and smelled a bit like alcohol but it is gone now.

I think it was a small investment for our door that was $1600! Rain-x lasts about 1 month but this lasts at least 3 and maybe more depending on use and then they just come and do it again. He also gave me a bottle of "refresher" to use as needed-maybe twice a year.

I am waiting for Dh to get the first shower with the new door so I will post here and let you know how it does.
