Tonight I will be showing my Garden Club how to winter sow for the second year in a row. At our initial meeting last month, so many asked for me to do this once more that the speaker for tonight became moi!! This is a great bunch and I'm looking forward to it.

In the last week I have created a garden where we buried our beloved Jack after he suffered an unexpected heart attack at the young age of three on our Thanksgiving, October 13th. Here he is.

I planted some winter sown Echinaceas, Penstemons, Korean Lilac, and Rudbeckias. I know he'll surely love it.

Yesterday I placed 18 Buddleias in the holding bed.

This winter sowing is keeping me busy every season and I truly enjoy it!!

Hi Nicole,
So sorry to hear about your Jack! :( He is such a sweet looking guy. Love his little black nose and chin.

It's true. Gardens are not static. Like they say, if it's not one thing it's another. In the past my biggest problem (if I remember right) was lack of water for the roses. Then I discovered accidently that my roses do much better with daily water. So I installed a micro sprinkler system through all the beds. Wow! Did it work and work wonders!! I've been all happy and self-satisfied for over a year, but lately the worm has turned. My nemesis is squirrels. SQUIRRELS! I remember one of my rose-sisters in CA warned that squirrels were a big problem for her drip system (maybe Rosefolly?). Little did I know... These buggers have chewed through several plastic/pvc connectors, 1/4" tubing for the pots, shrubblers, drippers, brass knobs, resin chairs, stacked nursery pots, the corner of the shed... causing geysers and mini-firehoses that shoot water everywhere making my water bill spike off the chart and reducing pressure in the line so nothing gets water. Since it operates while I'm asleep, I don't know about it for a while - until plants start looking bad - or I get a utility bill in the mail. The only thing that stops them is hardware cloth so I'm looking at wrapping all the 1/4" tubing in hardware cloth. That should be fun. After they had breakfast on a new hydrangea plant (not in the ground yet) I declared war and decided I would put out D-Con, taped to the top of the shed (their super-highway through the trees) where kitties can't get to it. Early the next morning I awoke in a panic - what if the birds eat it? I got up and peeled it off. A friend told me it wouldn't work anyway because squirrels are smarter than rats. I was looking forward to picking up the bodies. Thrips ruined the end of the first flush, and Anna Olivier's second flush is a disaster. I may have to reconsider her future along with E Veyrat Hermanos who, despite a beautiful beginning, balled completely after a poorly timed rainstorm. The upside of that is looking for replacements. :)) Encroaching shade may be the end of Mrs B R Cant in which case I'll buy another hydrangea. They're deciduous (I hate bare bushes all winter), but they don't mind neutral soil. The armadillos dig up the beds every night, but so far haven't damaged any plants - just make the bed ugly and make the sidewalk & driveway messy. Apparently, for some of us gardening is the proverbial "two steps forward, one step back", and for others it's "one step forward and two steps back". And next year we'll all switch places. Mine weed-whacks in the borders, doesn't know how to weed, in fact I'm not sure about my Northern Sea Oats. I am forced to forgive him though, he is not a gardener, and he's dealing with both cancer and heart failure, so if a plant is gone I just sigh, and I am very grateful that he is still here. Thanks to all who replied to my question. I read both the WS FAQs and SS thread. I honestly never thought I had to cover anything I planted outside when the weather was nice - just let Mother Nature do her job. Now, I'll put the stuff I had inside, outside with a cover. I especially liked the FAQ "Poster Suggestions for Flats from Recycleables" and also, the suggestions posted to this thread regarding containers. I needed to know what to start saving now in order to WS as economically and environmentally as possible. What wonderfully invented ideas people had. I had asked about coffee cans a few months back but did not get a resounding "Good Idea" so I guess I'll put those in the cycle bin and stick to the more widely used plastics that light can get through. Great to hear from my New England and Canadian neighbors - we can all commiserate together about all this rain (what was THAT last night?). Also, thanks to all for the "Welcomes" to the forum. I appreciate your time and thoughtfullness in helping me out. I'm sure I'll you'll be hearing from me again with more stupid questions! Zahzeen

I hadn't intended to actually sow on the solstice, but now that I've read this thread, I will definitely sow 4 containers. The solstice has always been celebrated in my culture, though I admit I have not been the best at carrying out those traditions since I became a mother. Life - Canterbury Bells - In the town I grew up in, the local church always rang the church bells when a wedding happened or when a baby was born in town. Bells symbolize the beginning of life to me. Mother Nature - Siberian Iris - I threw all my Siberian Iris and Blue Flag seed pods in one bag all mixed together. This will be the opportunity to see what survives! Remembrance - Moonbeam Coreopsis - This original plant came from my grandmothers house. She has since died and the house has been sold - so saving seed has been the only way I can get more of my grandmothers gardens. Faith - Luminaria - aka Money Plant. Though my family has not suffered through this multi-year recession, it has taught us that money is not as important to survival as once thought. You need to have faith in your own abilities. By growing luminaria, we will always have plenty of money!

Tiffy, so sorry about your loss. People who haven't had pets just don't understand the deep loss we feel. I have been in your shoes, though.

I'm sure your enthusiasm will come through in your talk and it will be a winner. Speaking of your enthusiasm, could you bottle up some of that young energy and mail to me?

Oh Tiffy, I'm so sorry to hear about your losing your kitty. I have 3 outside & 4 inside, and they are all so wonderful. I have one on my lap as I type this.
I did a wintersowing class for my garden club last year. Only a few actually tried it. Several thought I was crazy! But seeing is believing, and they couldn't believe how may plants I had to give away this summer!

Tiffy, tender thoughts coming your way - the kitties, the dogs, the other animals, the people who come and go - it only makes the circle of love wider. And a new garden is life-bringing.

I lost my best buddy Jonas this year too...silver haired gentleman that he was. I feel your pain, it is so hard...
Some of my seeds winter sown last year are starting to germinate, clematis, iris, polygonatum.
Am preparing to start few again soon. There is always something to look forward ...

I lost my sweet kitty Gizmo about 3 weeks ago to a heart attack, at age 9. Fortunately our other cat has adjusted. He was upset for about a week.

Good luck with your talk! I did one for the folks here at work and hopefully some of them will follow through.

Thanks for the kind thoughts everyone. Our pets usually live longer. Jack is buried next to Minnie, a Calico cat which lived 18 years and passed away last January. She helped me grow the most beautiful white Bleeding Heart this year. Quite appropriate. It was still flowering in August...

The talk went super well!! Some of the members from last year actually tried winter sowing last year and said they will definitely do it again this year coming. It added some credence to the method and I was so happy about that. Next meeting I will be bringing in hoards of seed for them to try. "Twas a good night!

Jack is sucha handsome boy! I'm sure he loves where he is! I lost my two boys, Sabastian and Cosmo over te last 2 years - both to cancer. I just keep planting more and more things to attract the birds and butterflies. Hopefully they are enjoying the view! Gardening is so theraputic isn't it!?!?!

Aw, I too, am sorry about your loss. He was such a pretty boy.

I once made my brother pick/axe the frozen soil around the blue spruce in January so I could bury Norton under his favorite climbing tree with his toys.

Tiffy, I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing any kind of family member hurts. I'm sure he gave you a lot a joy while he was with you!
