About me: My home is called Ladybug Manor. This is because I’ve had so many ladybugs since we bought our house two years ago. I’m thankful for them as the aphids try their best to take over my plants each year and the ladybugs keep them in check (along with my squishing them!).
I'm a total organic gardening addict and love growing from seed. I am about to start my second year of Winter Sowing and will always grow most all my plants that way. This year I'll start my Winter Sowing on the Winter Solstice, December 21st to pay respect to loved ones, wildlife, Mother Nature and the "Leap of Faith."
I don't have any particular favorite plants, because I love most everything! There are always new favorites and sometimes old favorites that find their way back to my heart. Right now I’m really hooked on penstemon, alyssum, and ornamental grasses. Penstemon is a favorite of the hummingbirds, so I’m incorporating it into all my garden space. Alyssum is just the most perfect border plant that keeps working darn near all year long. The grasses provide a beautiful spray when the wind blows and a different type of garden interest than flowers.
Winter interest is something that I let slip my mind in my first year of gardening at my home. It never crossed my mind until late last year when I realized that all my garden beds were barren. Luckily I have been able to collect some great seeds from GW and through buying seed and plants commercially. I’m really looking forward to seeing more beauty in my garden beds year round.
I’m trying to get away from hummingbird and seed feeders too. The penstemon, along with dozens of other trumpet shape blooming plants will replace the hummingbird feeders. I’m also growing plants that produce berries and those that will hold seeds through the winter. That will be a great way to feed the birds in winter when most things are going to seed.
There’s also a need for bird cover in my yard. There are woods surrounding me, and while that provides plenty of cover for the birds, I don’t get have the close up, personal experience of witnessing them raise their young. My shrub garden will allow me to do that.
My tropical garden will have a raised pond in it this upcoming year. I’m hopeful that this will bring more toads into my yard. Then I’ll be hanging a bat house so they can help the toads eat all the bad insects in my yard, especially those pesky mosquitoes!
I’m hopeful that one day my yard will be a Certified Wildlife Habitat. I’m pretty sure that doing all the things I mentioned above will at least be a great start, although I’m not to sure about attracting rabbits and other pesky wildlife to my yard!
