Shade tree near an in-ground swimming pool

Any ideas for a not-too-messy tree for shade near a pool. I'm considering Jacaranda. Thanks

I would not consider a Jacaranda a clean tree, between petals in he spring and seed pods in fall.

Jacranda would be very far down my list of trees near pool. As for anything else, not enough info for suggestions.

Far as the berries it is easy to cover them when they are fruiting and unless you have a tree over your poll I doubt the droppings will be a problem. I would not put the blueberries anywhere they will get splashed with pool water.

I came across one today that I think might do everything I was looking for, as well as meet most all of the advice I've been given: the Jane Magnolia. It's evergreen, so there aren't many leaves to worry about, it does flower, but only a few really large ones, so less mess, it's fairly fast growing, which is good for me, and doesn't get too tall. My only concern is that I don't believe you're supposed to trim many of the lower branches, which would mean it would have to sit 5-10 feet from the fence, which would eat up a lot of yard. Is my thinking correct here? I've liked a few of your suggestions - my concern is being able to find them near me. We don't have a ton of variety in my local nurseries.

One question: Does the prevailing wind move from your yard toward the neighbor's pool? Given a good hard 'blow' it seems that even trees that do not freely drop leaves/bloom, will become a problem to the pool owner. The prevailing wind may cause them to create a wind screen and that might solve the leaf-drop problem. We built our pool in the only place available on a city lot, and the wind gusting through was a problem that we solved with a wind-screen. I would also wonder what legal restrictions may be placed on tree owners to prevent leaf-drop/blown in a nearby pool. I think that some city/county regs place restrictions of that kind. Re: the pool owner complaining about leaf-drop from a tree that was already planted when they built their pool ... I know that trouble with neighbors can be horrible and it is worth effort to prevent ... but this person seems to have no problem with 'complaining' about trees in your yard... sounds impossible to please? My thought would be to make your best effort to prevent leaf-litter in their pool, and then it becomes their problem... to be handled as best they can -- constant skimming or pool cover. One of our neighbors complained that our house cast a shade over their pool ... didn't expect us to move our house, but just to complain that conditions were not as perfect as they felt entitled to. Definitely the Sunset list is a good starting point, and the trees and palms they list mostly have in common leaves that are larger or held for a long period of time, and not constantly shedding. The root issue also needs to be addressed, and this is as much a function of space and depth of soil and whether you irrigate to encourage deep rooting as it is upon the choice of tree. Palms are generally recommended because they don't drop foliage all year round, but the flowers and fruits can be messy at times. It would also help to know whether you have an open pool or a pool cover. Definitely avoid trees with smaller leaves that are constantly dropping year round such as Mayten trees, because the pool skimmer has a hard time keeping up with these.

I'm not sure that there are ANY non-messy shade trees! That's why you see swimming pools shaded with lattice, umbrellas, awnings, etc.

Thanks for the help - We are zone 9 East Bay of SF (Hot side of the hills). Bottom of a north-west facing slope. Soil is clay and I'm guessing rather acidic as a grove of monterey and other pines were just removed that shed like crazy into the pool. I want a new tree to clean up after less often.

I have a shantung maple planted in the yard next to my pool. It is an excellent choice. The shantung is planted downwind, so leaves never get into the pool. It's a very clean tree.
I have a japanese maple on the other side. The top layer of leaves on it sizzle and die in August. The dead leaves blow off of the tree and wind up in the pool.

We need shade on the east side of our old in-ground pool. We don't want to worry about too many falling leaves, but realize that to have shade you pretty much have to deal with leaves somehow. We saw some Prunus Carolina trees in So Ca. recently that looked attractive, but we wonder how they would do around the pool? Anything better?
