Red oak vs White oak - pictures please?
Comments (3)Go with real wood - hands down. In old house, I had all carpet torn up and had the hardwood floors refinished. Turned out great - and while yes, it can be messy, it wasn't as bad as I anticipated. The company did a great job. only took a few days to sand, clean, stain, finish. When we built current home 16 years ago - had hardwood floors installed in two rooms. We weren't moved in so no impact to us directly but again, it was a pretty easy process. And it still looks great 17 years later with MINIMAl upkeep. \ Real wood all the way if you can...See MoreRed Oak vs. Northern Red Oak
Comments (9)They are probably referring to the same thing. If you are in the Midwest most people will say Red Oak but if you look at a Quercus rubra tag in the nursery the common name will be listed as Northern Red Oak. In my experience Red Oak (or NRO) is quite variable in fall color but usually gives a decent display. I prefer many of the white oak hybrids like Prairie Stature, Forest Knight, etc... as they are more resistant to oak wilt and still give a nice color display in the fall. Growth rate of the red oak group as a whole is typically quicker than that of the white oak group. If your soil is acidic enough also think about trying Quercus ellipsoidalis or Quercus coccinea, both of which tend to have excellent fall color....See Morered oak vs. white oak floors
Comments (10)We put red oak in our last home with a clear finish. It had pink undertones. We have 1919 white oak in this house and it has a clear oil finish. It has beautiful golden undertones that blend very nicely with the chestnut stained trim which has amber shellac finish. We also like the lighter floors contrasted against the darker trim. our flooring guy recently patched a 1x2" area in one room. He was able to find historic scrap oak which was feathered in, again with the oil finish. Can't tell where the patch is. Don't know if you will have to deal with feathering in against any existing floor....See MorePlease help me decide - natural red oak vs. natural white oak.
Comments (27)mark_rachel, that is what I told my husband! And, Oak & Board, I've been studying this off and on for at least a year. You are one of my favorite commentors. I have learned a lot from you. Both of the samples are solid hardwood not engineered. KD is pleased with the quality of the floor and barely there bevel. Haven't seen a white oak floor yet in Michigan. Well aware of matching existing flooring of which we have none. Need a little more visual interest than the white oak. Considered natural hickory and I think it is too much for me. In my area, everyone is used to red oak. Boring Detroit area suburbs. Not a high end home....See MoreEmbothrium
