red oak vs. white oak floors

We had a great meeting at the house yesterday, but I was left confused about the hardwood flooring.

We are doing site finished oak through out the house and want it to complement but not necessarily match the 100 year old trim. I like the golden undertones in the dark trim and had thought that white oak would replicate this best (based only on the name). However, the flooring guy (quote guy not installer) says that red oak takes the stain better. I hear the name "red oak" and I picture orange or red undertones and a darker wood, but again, I haven't done my research yet.

Anyone care to help with my education or share pictures? This is such a major component of the rebuild, I really don't want to get it wrong.

Also, we are considering a penetrating oil finish rather than varnish top coat.
