I've ordered from Sequoia many times over the years and have always been happy with their roses, many of which are hard to find elsewhere. Yes, the pots are small, roughly equivalent to bands. I usually pot them up in gallon pots as soon as I get them. I keep them in the nursery garden for a year. Alternatively, if I have room in the nursery garden I will put them in the ground to be grown on for a year or two before putting them in the landscape.

Hi Kate! I've gotten most of my roses this year from Sequoia. Mine were a little smaller then Heirloom's bands but they do grow very quickly.
I've been very happy with my plants from them. They carry some very hard to find roses.

I'm happy to hear this is a good vendor to deal with. I'm really smitten with the two roses I mentioned above. You can't beat the price. Since I really don't have anywhere to keep babies over winter I think I will order them for Spring delivery.

The two roses you mentioned are both Miniatures, and it is pretty standard to ship minis in 3" containers. I have hundreds of roses that came from Sequoia Nursery and have rarely had a plant fail to thrive. Don't hesitate to buy.

Very good. Thanks. I just emailed them and found out they don't accept spring orders now until 2008. So much for my impulse shopping:( I did mark that on my calendar for January 1, 2008 however.

I called them last week on Tues. to check on availability of a couple off their Supplemental list (great list by the way!), the woman checked them from a list right in front of her, "yes, no, yes" and I had my well branched and rooted bands by Thurs. I will definitely order again!

Sue have you grown Buttermint? This nursery really sounds like they have it together which is exciting. Can't wait for next spring.

Hi Kate, sorry I didn't see your thread. I like to visualize with pics. Here was my original mini garden, all new roses planted, they've all been transplanted elsewhere now. Couldn't find a good pic of Twilight Skies other than the pic that I put at HMF with the water on it. Here is a pic of Buttermint, I bought it on 9-5-06 as a 2" plant and this pic is of it on 10-23-06.

I don't plant my roses in pots first, never have. I put them directly in the ground. Sometimes I put a tomato cage around them to keep my cats off of them, my dog is gone now, but that would serve also to keep him away. These may be small but they take off very fast. I put pics on one of my slide show threads of one of my newest roses, Precious Dream, the growth in just a few weeks exampling it for Daun.

Hope this helps you out with the various size plants from Sequoia. I put the garden in before the yard that year:)

Love the pictures. What a sweet little garden that was. I'm starting to think with the size difference between Twilight Skies and Buttermint I will just buy two of latter and bookend Twilight Skies with them. I'll post a picture next spring if that comes to pass. I don't recall you posting on whether or not Buttermint is a vigorous bloomer or not. Cute little guy though.

You're very welcome Kate, it's my pleasure. Yes, Buttermint does put out nicely, see all the buds on that little plant? You keep it deadheaded, it'll keep you in roses:) It's one that I still have about 6 roses on now. That sounds like an excellent solution:) Both will bloom beautifully for you from first of April until now or whenever your roses usually finish, especially mild years like this. Key to both is daily deadheading if you can manage.

Only problem with that garden was it was the north side of the house. It still made a perfect place to start all the initial roses, it's now my shade garden.

We've had a good year of cherishing this wonderful nursery, and its wonderful people, but now as Mr. Moore draws close to 101, we ARE preparing to lose Sequoia.

The final shipping day will be April 30, 2008.

What Jeri is saying is that Sequoia Nursery will be closing this Spring, permanently. The Nursery has enjoyed 60 plus years of business but like all good things, its time has come and gone. So, the deal is this: if you have been contemplating buying ANYTHING from Sequoia, do it NOW.

Sorry to hear that, though I fully understand.

I've never been able to order from them as they can't ship to FL, but I was hoping someday the restrictions would be lifted. They have a nice list of old roses and I was coveting some of Mr. Moore's minis.

I like that their prices reflect that you are getting a smaller plant-that's ok with me- they grow. If they have a healthy root system they grow like weeds, when they get into more dirt, with room to spread out.

Something interesting I've noticed about the smaller plants too is they make the transition to a different place better. They are light and easy to move around. And if you be gentle with them, those babies don't even know they've been moved, especially so if they've come from somewhere with similar climate.

Kate ~ About the size of the bands...If you order minis the band size is a lot smaller than regular bands.
Don't hesitate to order from them. I am going to place an order too.
Will tell you guys what I am getting after I place my order. Better chance of getting it!

Sequoia is such a treasure, so sad to hear they are closing.

Well sniff! I just discovered Sequoia very recently. I greatly appreciate all the information. We are having such a freakishly mild winter here I'm starting to wonder if maybe I could order now instead of March and be successful. Thanks everyone for the info and what a quality vendor they are and the encouragement about their baby mini's.

All orders placed with Sequoia Nursery must be shipped by April 29th at the very latest. There will be no Fall/Winter shipments in 2008. The nursery closes permanently on April 30th, 2008 so all shipments must be wrapped up on April 29th.

Oh very nice list Daun! I saw a mature Vineyard Song in the nursery last spring when I was looking for roses. It was beautiful. It was one of the roses recommended to me by the manager. I didn't get it only because I was there for climbers and got Sweet Chariot instead. I have 4 fat little buds on my Out Of The Night rose I planted in Oct. I don't know if they will bloom, we're in the 50's now down here.
I have my coated Christmas bags handy for below freezing days on the young roses. It works excellent. I've used them twice last week and no die back on tender new growth on minis even.

Adrienne, I'm taking an extra foot of grass out and putting more roses in the front of my large rose garden. No chance to hide it from my DH. I just kind of told him, BTW, when the cement border guy comes on Monday, I'm moving the border out because I want more roses:) They're small plants so you just kind of put them here and there and he won't notice, much...

Nice selection you got too, I think Rainforest will always have very pretty colors for you with your cooler temps. I don't know where you're going to put this one, but you might think of a small trellis with it and grow it as a small climber.
