Iris orders are arriving . . . what's in yours?
Comments (40)Carlos, I am amazed at how many iris you have growing on a city lot. It must be a very large lot. You have many on those lists to add to your Schreiner's collection. I also see that you have a large number of Walter Moores iris. I am also a collection of Moores iris and also have a good collection of the older Schreiner's iris. I plan in the near future to get all my Schreiner's and Moores' iris into their own areas. Now they are growing in various iris areas. I have a collection of the Dykes Metal winners. At least I have something growing under all the names. I am not sure anyone knows the true ID of some of the older Dykes winners. I have several different older Dykes iris growing under the same name. I have 20 acres of which 14 could be used to grow iris if I need the space. I have several iris areas that may cover about 2 acres all together. I have several mass planting of older iris(Quaker Lady, New Snow, Wabash, Shah Jehan, Cardinal, Indian Chief). I started with iris 5 years ago and am just now getting enough material to arrange it into different gardens. Lee Mincy...See MoreHas anyone had experience with Sunbelt Garden flame?
Comments (30)The upright pink in the picture is Queen of Sweden which seems to do well here in full sun regarding black spot but rebloom is weak. I know planting that close together is usually a no no and understand that air circulation may help prevent disease, but. My experience here is that Bordeaux, earth angel and all those I mentioned being healthy here get minimal disease here even when planted close together. On the other hand I have planted other varieties alone with no other roses around for several feet and they still defoliate by June. So while spacing may be one contributing factor in the equation, it does not seem to be as key as genetics and good hydration. I am no expert and would not advise anyone to plant so close, but I like it. I used to rotate fungicides. Pretty much any I could find at my local Lowe’s. Bayers disease control which has a group 3 was a regular, and then looked for any other with a different mode of action to avoid resistance. In the future I think I will make a small area where I will have varieties that require spraying. I am a sucker for all Austin’s and I can’t grow 99% of them without spraying....See MoreBliss is indeed a good name
Comments (13)Yes, Dianela, I have Earth Angel, own root, about 7 yrs. old now. I planted her in a focal part at the front of my rose bed because her height was stated as 36". Ha! Even in my colder zone she gets 6+' tall. I wish I had moved her when the window of doing so when she was young was open. Now, it's too late to move her without causing a major shock to her. I just prune her hard in spring, and have many more basal canes, maybe as many as 8 that I believe try to keep her shorter than her potential, but still, by fall, her 6'+ height is rreached, and she throws the height progression of the bed out of order. I still like her lots. Balling up is experienced, but even balled up, the bloom is pretty. Your Earth Angel is quite a show piece, really robust and the bloom you show above is so beautiful, very captivating. The reason we grow roses. Moses...See MoreWhat’s wrong with my Meteor?
Comments (34)I’ve seen some horrible blooms on Meteor from the UK too, no idea how it won ’Rose of the Year’. I just tried another ‘new‘ release from Kordes, Spotlight. That gave me one or two decent yellow blooms in early Spring, but as soon as the temperatures began to even moderately climb, blooms instantly turned white and spotty - no staying power whatsoever! These two were bred in 2008 and 2010, maybe Kordes are getting desperate and recycling past duds?...See MoreRelated Professionals
