Comparing Teas: Miss Atwood and Anna Olivier
Comments (4)Jerome - sorry, but I have never seen Miss Atwood. I have 3 plants of Anna Olivier, however, and that is one of my most favorite roses. Here in the SF Bay Area (we are about 6 blocks from the Bay, but miles from the Ocean) it is very healthy. It blooms continuously, starting its first Spring flush right now, and we had blooms through January. One of my plants is the old old original one - it is in a thicket of large bushes, growing under a huge old privet tree. Nonetheless, it blooms and blooms. So, I would say it is happy in partial shade or direct sun. The one in the sun blooms more, of course. It is a gorgeous color - usually buff with a sort of brick/dark pink reverse on the outer petals. Sometimes the blossoms come out 100% very pale yellow, or pink, but most of them are the buff color. The one I have climbing on our porch is about 9 feet tall, but I think it would get taller if I let it. It grows right next to our driveway, and so I have to prune it to keep it out of the way of the cars, and it does not seem to mind at all. Please let us know how Miss Atwood does when she gets bigger - the pictures of that one on HMF were beautiful. jackie...See More'Anna Olivier' or?
Comments (4)Presuming the "emeryville" location is that of Emeryville, CA, I am in the same climate you are in the Bay Area. I have 3 bushes of Anna Olivier, one of which is over 80 years old (it is the cultivar Vintage Gardens got their Anna Olivier from). It is my very favorite rose of the 100+ I have. It grows in the shade, in sun, and is very healthy. Usually a beautiful peach/cream with brick color on the back of the outside petals, it can also sometimes have flowers that are very pale yellow or very pale pink. It blooms continuously in the sun, and repeats in moderate shade. My very old bush is huge (say, 15 feet wide by 10-12 feet high), but I have one I rooted that I keep pruned to a flat shape about 2 feet deep by 5 feet wide (it is planted on our house right next to the driveway) by about 8 feet tall, and it seems happy, and blooms prolifically. I would highly recommend this rose!...See MoreComparing buds of Anna Olivier and Lady Roberts
Comments (5)Ingrid - I saw your post about your bunnies. We have tons of squirrels and one deer which visits us here, and they munch away, but our conditions are very benign, unlike yours, so the damage they do is not noticeable (at least to me, because I like animals, as you obviously do). In your harsh surroundings, you are providing them with an oasis - I think that is great. Your garden looks lovely anyway, by the way. Jackie...See MoreAnna Olivier and Le Vesuve
Comments (10)Etoile de Lyon blooms are always yellow, and look just like AO blooms when it is in its yellow mood. That's how, IMO, they got mixed up in commerce. "Bermuda AO" is really EdL. According to Vintage Gardens, they also had the wrong rose as AO. My ancient AO in my garden was IDd because I took some blooms to a Celebration of Old Roses and put them on the mystery table, and by chance the Australian tea rose ladies were visiting, and were able to ID those blooms, as the correct AO was still in commerce in Australia. Then Vintage Gardens re-introduced the correct AO back into commerce in North America, from cuttings of my rose. They sent it all over to old rose nurseries - they told me they did not want it to get lost. So fun! The pics above are from a bush which I grew from a cutting of my old ancient one, which we think was at least 100 yrs old when it finally died a few years ago. Jackie...See Morejill_perry_gw
