Comparing buds of Anna Olivier and Lady Roberts

I have several Anna Oliviers, all rooted cuttings from my ancient huge one (aka Schmidt's Buff Giant). I have one Lady Roberts, from the Open Garden Sale at the Sacramento Historic Rose Garden.

I was told that LR was a darker colored sport of AO. Neither of them are very dark in the open blooms. They both have more color on their buds. What I was told is correct! Here are the darkest buds I could find on both Lady Roberts and Anna Oliver. LR is definitely darker, and otherwise looks and grows identically to AO. Nice to find out that some rose IDs appear to be what they are supposed to beX!

Another pic of AO I took about a month ago - this is about as dark as the blooms on this rose get - the ones on LR are sometimes much darker.

Jackie, I agree with Folly your Anna Olivier is absolutely glorious Ã¢ÂÂ¦. and so tall! I think I'll leave plenty of space around Lady Roberts so she can grow as tall as she pleases. I'm planning to develop an area for tea roses and old roses - about 12 metres (roughly 40 feet) wide by 16 metres (roughly 52 feet) long - in my garden. At the moment it's just grass and very tough weeds (think giant thistles with enormous tap roots). So, I have a lot of work to do before I start planting. Did I mention that I have the worst clay soil imaginable??? Now that Summer is upon us it will be impossible to dig a hole in it, even with a pickaxe, until September. So far the roses I have for this area are Lady Hillingdon, Safrano, Lady Roberts, Souvenir de la Malmaison, Old Blush, Cecile Brunner, and three or four unknown old tea roses that I've grown from cuttings taken at our local cemetery. Here is a picture of the back of the small bloom today - I am now completely convinced that it is Lady Roberts - supposed to be a darker color sport of Anna Olivier, which is exactly what this looks like. I am looking forward to its variable blooms in the future - my AO sometimes puts out blooms that look nothing like the typical ones - tea roses keep us on our toes! I am interested in the "flower sport" issue - this bloom does not appear to have as many petals (65!) as the first few - I will be counting them when it has blown. Jeri, if you see this can you let me know how many petals your LR has, or does that vary a lot? Jackie

Presuming the "emeryville" location is that of Emeryville, CA, I am in the same climate you are in the Bay Area. I have 3 bushes of Anna Olivier, one of which is over 80 years old (it is the cultivar Vintage Gardens got their Anna Olivier from). It is my very favorite rose of the 100+ I have. It grows in the shade, in sun, and is very healthy. Usually a beautiful peach/cream with brick color on the back of the outside petals, it can also sometimes have flowers that are very pale yellow or very pale pink. It blooms continuously in the sun, and repeats in moderate shade. My very old bush is huge (say, 15 feet wide by 10-12 feet high), but I have one I rooted that I keep pruned to a flat shape about 2 feet deep by 5 feet wide (it is planted on our house right next to the driveway) by about 8 feet tall, and it seems happy, and blooms prolifically. I would highly recommend this rose!

Congratulations Jackie! Your Lady Roberts bloom is lovely - on my monitor it closely resembles the colour of my Safrano blooms at the moment. My Lady Roberts (purchased in May 2014) was extremely variable in colour last year - everything from verging on white to deepest pink! Rather a shock, however, here's the colour that it produced at the beginning of May 2015 - My Anna Olivier hasn't flowered yet this spring but she does have lots of buds - if she is half as beautiful as your AO bloom above, I'll be very happy. These are both so beautiful. I've lusted after Lady Roberts for years but I have my doubts about how much longer roses can be kept alive here.

Ingrid - I saw your post about your bunnies. We have tons of squirrels and one deer which visits us here, and they munch away, but our conditions are very benign, unlike yours, so the damage they do is not noticeable (at least to me, because I like animals, as you obviously do). In your harsh surroundings, you are providing them with an oasis - I think that is great. Your garden looks lovely anyway, by the way.

I had both for a while, but when I cut my collection by 50%, decided to keep just Anna Olivier. Looking at the two pictures, I think it was an okay decision. The two are not different enough to need them both in a moderately-sized collection. They really are very, very similar.
