11th annual Rare and Unusual Rose Auction

It is time once again for our rose society to have its major fundraising event, and for all of you to drool over the rare and unusual roses that COULD come to live in your gardens. Most of the roses we auction are not now available anywhere else in commerce and there is something for everyone on the lists -- some for OGR enthusiasts, some for exhibitors, some for cold zoners and others more appropriate to warmer zones. This year we have something of a specialty in micro-minis and roses of Japanese origin, which seem to have a certain elegance to them.

Anyways, please peruse the lists at your convenience. As always, the roses will be divided into a live auction and a silent auction, both held on November 13 in Carlsbad, California, and we will accept on-line bids until noon on November 12th. And again (because it worked well last year) we will be holding roses for those of you in colder zones until spring, and will ship them to you when your weather is appropriate. Almost all of the roses are own-root roses that we grew for the auction from cuttings.

I see a ton I want after just looking at the live auction. Afraid to look any further.

We just finished putting links on the Auction website linking each rose to its listing in HMF (except for those roses that HMF does not list). Should be easier to look at the roses now.

I think the high price rose this year (and deservedly so in my opinion) was Takao at $72. Attached is a pic of my Takao today that I posted on HMF. But the roses are not all expensive. I ended up with four roses: Symphony (Austin yellow) $6 By Appt. (Harkness very fragrant apricot floribunda) $8 Poopsie (a new exhibition mini-flora not available in commerce anywhere) $17 Dorothy Anne (an older hybrid tea by Joe Winchel that is no longer in commerce) $19. Well then look for us next year -- same time, same place. We had a few internet bidders, but mostly it was locals, and, as expected, we had more roses than bidders. So there were some great deals to be had. I was "bottom fishing," (i.e. searching for those rarities that didn't get much bidding attention from anyone else) and ended up spending only a total of $80 for ten roses, all for interesting varieties that are mostly new to me. But now I have them and will post photos as they bloom. I got roses that run the gamut: Ain't She Sweet -- Joe Winchel's hot pink hybrid tea from the same line that produced the rose "Dolly Parton." Beauty Within -- a new J & P yellow floribunda. introduction that won "best floribunda" at the International Rose Trial at Rose Hills just last month. Bukavu -- a Louis Lens hybrid musk that has been winning at rose shows recently. Honorine de Brabant -- a striped OGR bourbon for my stripey collection. Merveille des Rouges -- a red polyantha. New Orleans -- a brand new shrub introduction from Heirlooms this year that I'm excited about. Robert Clements -- an Heirlooms old classic that has many good reports, but I've never seen this orange shrub in person. Schubert -- a mauve shrub that grows like a polyantha Summer Fashion -- a pastel yellow and pink floribunda I used to grow and remember liking. Vif Eclat -- a red hybrid musk, which I bought because hybrid musks are usually pink and white, so this seemed very unusual. Again, I'll post pics when I have them of these, and we hope to see you next year. Btw, Connie was correct -- we don't ship for free, but rather at "our cost," which mean you pay for shipping, but only the actual cost of postage and supplies, nothing for our labor and no markups of any kind. Hey there ya'all- I wanted to give one last shout out for anyone still thinking about joining in on the fun- There is till the close of the day Saturday to sign up for this exchange- don't be shy and let this pass you by- Just post below before Sunday! If you have 1 type of seed that qualifies- just send in 5 packets of that seed and receive 5 different packets back! If you have more than 1 type- well you can send them all if you wish.... It is easy and fun! For those of you who have signed up- I will close this "New" invatational post- and start another "UPDATE" post with the same 3rd annual named variety/rare/unusual seed exchange subject line for us to use for the follow up posts on Sunday morning. I received envelopes from Romando/Amanda and JSelwa today! And I would like to add- this IS going to be a good swap for us all! I can tell already!! So many folks are digging deep to find their rare or unsusal or special named variety seeds- It can't help but be good for all of us!! Wow -- is there still time for me to join in? I'm kind of a newbie but from your lists I see lots that I can send to fill wishes- so here goes. Any heuchera Coleus (black dragon or others) Columbine - single colored varieties- bright colors or an all white variety is better! Lobelias -- or other trailers for pots Black, rust or peach colored flowers for my peach garden Echinachea- other than white swan or the plain purple variety(Peach would be great) Daisies - have clara curtis, giant white, and white shasta-- my three little girls just love to cut and cut all season long and far be it from me to discourage future gardeners! Coreopsis of any variety I don't have (coreopsis I have include: pink, zagreb, seashell, mahogohny midget, moonbeam) Lavendar - Spanish Pink Forget me nots Black Eyed Susan Vine - all colors Gladiola Seeds Monarda Flowering Groundcovers -- nothing invasive like vinca or ajuga I would prefer not to get-- Daturas, Moonflowers, Four O'clocks -except for the variegated kind -would love those, Cactus, Succulents or shade lovers --other than what was listed above-- I have very little shade. Also not interested in herbs and have all my veggie seeds for next year allready.

I can't stand it! So many wonderful roses available ... with so many here still to plant ... maybe I can squeeze in a couple more ... small ones, maybe ... ooh, what's that climber ... I have no control.

I just wanted to let everyone know that we've just yesterday added a simply amazing rose to the auction. That rose is an older hybrid tea called Funkuhr, and it starts out yellow and the edges turn red with exposure to sun.

As far as we know, the only plants of this rose in the U.S. are our mother plant and one that is growing in a public garden in Portland, and of course the one we are selling at the auction.

I haven't even seen this rose, but those who have describe it as disease resistant and amazingly pretty.

Take a look. We will, of course, take bids on-line until Nov. 12. We expect this rose to generate a fair amount of excitement. as it has not been for sale in the U.S. ever, as far as we know. It's a Kordes rose that was never released as a commercial variety on this side of the Atlantic, although it has been popular in Germany.

Last call for internet bids. Final time for on-line bids is noon today. Our weather is horrible -- it's pouring kitties and puppies right now -- which means our attendance and therefore the prices, will probably be lower than usual. I'm thinking $10 to $15 should be the average price for roses on the Silent Auction list and just a little higher on the Live Auction list. Of course there will be some that will catch fire price wise, but not too many of them.

We have 230 roses to sell and are expecting 30-35 in person bidders. That's not very many.

And of course, we couldn't resist adding a few more new varieties that came our way at the last moment, so there is new stuff on the website from the last time you looked.

I lost out on Aozora having dropped out at $70, but that was the only rose I did not get. Thanks to Kathy Strong for bidding and then holding them until the spring for me!
