I like to spend time in the garden, in the rain. It does have a magical and refreshing quality to it.

It's also fun to wander in trails in the woods, with the canopy of trees making an umbrella from the raindrops.

Sure, I also love to walk through our garden when its' raining.
I was raised in Seattle, where the chances were good that if I didn't do something in the rain, it might never get done.
I remember how my mom would continue gardening for hours after rain started to fall, or sometimes, even after night fell. There she'd be, killing slugs, or weeding, with a flashlight in one hand and a trowel or salt shaker in her other gloved hand. She was an enthusiastic gardener.

There's a whole different feeling in the garden when it is raining. I love walking in a soft, gentle rain. We often stand on the covered porch while a storm rages, too.

Especially after a long dry spell, walking in the rain is like walking through blessings. Refreshing.

We pretty much do everything in the rain.

Thank goodness I love the rain. I like to sit on my porch (covered of course!) with a coffee and watch and listen to the rain.

Although right now we have a lot of snow coming down, very cold storm from Alsaska blew in this morning.

Rain is likely to be accompanied by thunder and lightning here, so I stay indoors. But I love walking through my yard late at night, when the sky is clear, the moon is full, and the only other light comes from the street lamp on the corner. It's a great time for getting a "big picture" look at how the broad, sweeping lines of the individual beds, the lawn, and the walkways work together as a garden. During the day I'm easily distracted by details - the perfect bloom here, the weed there - but at night, I experience the garden on a whole different level. I make a lot of decisions about garden layout at night. It's so much easier to see when the macro elements are awkwardly placed or out of proportion then.

Oh yeah what a nice experience it can be and if it gets too heavy I go in the shed and sit with doors open and inhale!

Ah,rain. I've always loved the rain. The secretary at work always fussed on the rainy days when I would dance in singing and she would say "oh yeah, you're the nut who LOVES the rain." I'm guilty as charged.

I grew up living in an old civil war era house right beside the first green on a golf course that my Dad kept beautiful.
I loved to walk over the fairways in a gentle summer rain after all of the golfers had gone home. So many heavenly shades of green. The only sound was the rain whispering all around. I so wish I could go back to those days. Of course the house is gone now and Dad is in heaven. But,those memories are still with me.

Devon, please do keep us posted on the romance. You know us old rose lovers are hopeless romantics!

If if is just plain rain, I may go out in it, but usually I just go inside and wait the customary 20 minutes for the thing to pass. Rain here doesn't usually occur in a way that one can go out in it and just wander around. It can, however, be much more entertaining to watch the clouds do some wild things. Rain in this area can be accompanied with some wind, hail, lightning, thunder, and sometimes the tornado sirens with warnings going out on the radio and TV for anything more than a passing cloud. A rainstorm around here is a media circus event to see who can get the most intense coverage of something that probably won't even happen and yet achieve the highest ratings.

Its a must when its warm and a soft rain is falling.

Devon, I loved your romantic and magical description of a perfect moment in time. The times I've felt like that in the garden have always been in rain, mist or near dark. There are times after a hot spell that I will wake and find the garden swathed in a mysterious mist as though it's become another world. These are precious times.

Devon---I love a nice soft gentle spring rain----There is a Bearded Iris Farm not far from my home------One day a few years ago we walked through this lovely area with a soft rain falling and the fragrance was unbelievable.

I would like to add a couple of comments to what I previously said. I do like the rain. I wish it would rain more here. We usually could use it. The other is something I haven't seen mentioned, and that is this. I like the clean air smell after a rain. The air just smells so much better after the dust, dirt, pollen, and pollution in general get washed out. It might just be ozone after the lightning, but I don't care. I just like the clean, fresh smell.

Devon, I love rain and it makes me happy and excited when we get some. But I must agree with CemeteryRose that when it rains here, it is too cold to sit outside. I do rarely continue working in the garden when a light rain starts until I am too chilled, but I would not just sit in the cold and wet when inside are hot drinks and a fire.

Responses aplenty, but nobody's yet given a direct answer to Devon's question . . . so, here goes: NO! When it is raining I do not rush out and sit down in the garden.

Veelakin, I also never sit down in the garden when it rains. With no roof anywhere all surfaces get too wet and unpleasant. The past summer was so dry that every drop was welcome and did not drive me inside. It was a splendid opportunity to water the garden.

If it is a nice soft day (i.e. misty or a fine drizzle) then definately yes, but not when it is truly raining. I hate getting soaked. On a similar note, I positively adore walking through the garden when it is snowing.

I couldn't help thinking about sitting in the rain in the garden yesterday. We had a huge downpour. Something wonderful happens here after a generous amount of rain. Our property becomes nearly a rainforest. The moss on the oak trees turns emerald green and all the rivulets began to run. Gorgeous waterfalls appear. When I open the door the sound of rushing water is so loud where not long before the land was bone dry. Of course it's not for sitting in but a lovely walk in our rain coats is great.
