Autumn is cool and the season I do most of my planting. It brings the most rains and less sun--more vibrant colors for roses.

Fall always reminds me of a new start. My memories are of football games and school. Leaves too.
I adore fall and love the cool weather.

That poem is very appropriate. I read it and it really reflected my feelings I had this morning. I walked the garden and looked into the greyish sky thinking that summer is on it's way out and fall is on it's way in.

I use to hike the fourteen miles from Bridger bowl to Bozeman,Montana every year right after labor day.That was after spending two hard hours climbing to the top of the mountain.The brisk fall football weather, as Carla put it,and being able to gave serenely down on the beautiful valleys below was the highest high of my life.Wish I could get up there again.

Its refreshing, cool crisp days, lots of clean air, its "almost" better than spring, I like it!

I also adore Fall. The crisp air, sweaters, Halloween with cuties coming to the door, and of course, the World Series.

Autumn in New England is famous for a reason. It is sublimely, heartbreakingly beautiful. I live in the NW Connecticut hills, a continuation of the Massachusetts Berkshires and the Green Mountains of Vermont. Our woods, filled with oak, sugar maple, and Canadian hemlock, are part of a rich and unique ecosystem. Rocky outcrops of granite and marble catch the light. Spires of old churches still point skyward at every tiny crossroads. At this time of year, the maple in the front yard is thinking about turning an improbable shade of pumpkin. Already, formations of Canada geese have flown, honking, overhead. There are late roses in the garden. Goldenrod and asters adorn the roadside. Soon, sun through the leaves will be like sun through stained glass. Scarlet and gold will accent the deep hemlock green. Already the light has changed. It is like golden honey, maple syrup, egg yolk. It pours and drips out of an intensely blue sky. There is a pond on our road. I passed it this morning early. The yellow sun was shining as a golden mist rose from the water. Wisps of fog settled in the curves of the road. In a long, warm, leisurely season, the leaves will blaze and the leaves will fall. The harvest will be gathered. Pumpkins will light the way for souls. The headless horseman will ride.

Ramblinrose, I agree, it's "almost" (but not quite) better than spring. In the spring, there's nothing like the earth coming back to life after it has looked dead for months.

Quitecontrary, what a great description of Autumn. Sounds
like the Autumn of my dreams. Your describing it was like
reading a poem. I know New England in the fall is magic. I
have been lucky enough to have been there at that time of
year. Thank you for that inspired description of your Autumn.

I enjoyed these poetic descriptions of autumn very much! Love the ending line also, "the headless horseman will ride"! That is so evocative of fall. When I look at some old woods in fall and the crunch of twigs is underfoot, I can imagine him on a ride.

Not sure what I can add....but NC in the foothills of the Appalachians is a place where the land has contours. Once the leaves turn colors and start to fall, the trees have a lacy look where each one stands out from the other in a different color. The woods are easier to see through, so you can see hills and vales that were obscured in summer by the green. The sky can be an intense blue, clean and sparkling. THe air is scented with leaves burning and people's fireplaces. Little red crabapples decorate my tree, nandina and holly plants form their berries.

Up in the mountains you can drive through tunnels of gold, gold and orange raining down and swirling around you. Apples and apple cider are sold at roadside stands. The clouds drape the mountains in mist. It seems that crows like to caw more in such weather.
I love NC in fall and spring.

Linda, where you live sounds so wonderful. An intense
blue sky, with all that gold and red in the trees, must be
like a postcard. I love the description of driving through
the tunnels of gold and orange leaves, swirling around.
And apples and cider being sold at roadside stands, so
autumnal. The hills and valley's there must be stunning.
North Carolina, surely, is one of the most beautiful states.

Autumn is wonderful in NY state. I love the rich vibrant colors, especially the dark red and copper leaves.

There's something fun and invigorating about walking through a pile of leaves. A pleasant rustling sound to it.

Apple cider sure is tasty, love to get that in the autumn.

It is the reason I planted 3 sugar maples on my property.

There's nothing like the cool, crisp autumn air; the brillant array of colors; the flurry of activity in winter preparation; and, of course, the delicious smells and tastes of pumpkin pies, apple cider, and on and on (I'm hungry!).

Autumn on the coast
is gentle soaking rain,
warm days and chilly eves,
an orangely glowing moon over pine trees,

I love autumn but I'm afaid with the drought we've had the trees won't be very beautifull. In fact the leaves are dropping green on some to protect themselves from the nasty summer. As I'm typing this it's 93 outside.

Fall in Kamloops, British Columbia.

The skys fill with grey clouds heavy with rain.
The wind stirs the fallen leaves and whips through the Ponderosa Pines. It blows holes in the rain clouds and they let through a pale yellow sun.
The Stellar's Jays come back from their summers in cooler climates.
The smell of woodsmoke is in the air.
The mountains get their first dusting of winter snow and the frost sparkles on the last roses of the season.

Thanks to all who posted photos!!! I MUST do some traveling to New England in the fall someday!!! Absolutely breathtaking!

I remember on year, when we still lived in NY (on Long Island). We took a drive up to NH to a friend who was giving us a kitten. The leaves that year were spectacular, I'll never forget it.

Last year the SE had a great fall, lots of color. I don't hold out much hope for this year because of the drought. I should have taken more pics.

Well, my autumn lasted 3 days. It was glorious. Clean crisp air and them BOOM!!! Summer is back with a vengence.
