Prune now or cross my fingers?

A number of my 3yr. old roses have shot up this summer with 6ft. canes. We get some real winter blasts here. I am worried about the cane damage in the wind,snow and ice. They have to be pruned in the spring anyway to shape and thicken. Would it be better to do it now or would the open cut ends be open to other damage worse then just letting the long canes whip in the winter wind? I have only been growing roses here for 5 years and am still learning. Before I have always pruned lightly in the spring just as the leaves were budding out to just remove all the winter damage.

Some gardeners practice "topping," which is cutting back less than you expect to prune in spring in order to reduce damage from wind or ice.

I don't think this is a big danger, but one year I got a lot of botrytis canker starting in the cut cane ends because of mild weather in early winter. It ran down the canes about a foot.

Or maybe that was "tipping".

Just don't prune your fingers.

In "normal" years, they get to OKC around April 15th. But, with these prevailing south winds and warm temps, they may get here sooner. The map at JN reflects they are in Southern Oklahoma now. Susan

Sue, I had the same experience, oddly not with my first pair of progressives but my most recent prescription. I went to a new opthalmologist and the script was just not right. I went back to have them rechecked and he changed the script. Still not good. Went to another doc in the same office -- even worse. By now my optician was ready to kill me because he had changed the lenses so many times. Then I gave up and just wore my old glasses. Then I wanted some contact lenses which I wear onnly occasionally. A good friend recommended her doctor, so I gave her a try. Voila! Not only did I come out with the best fitting lenses I ever had, I also got a script for my regular glasses that work like a dream. The tiniest bit of difference can make a huge difference in your vision. I swear I will never change my script again after that experience. I'm so glad yours are finally working out. Isn't it a relief?

yeah I know, car accidents are never particularly good.. but in our case since no one was hurt it is great !!! We can afford a new car now :-) We didnt put a deadline on it but we are going to give her the full weekend to read it over before we ask about it again... I dont know he said she sounded a little suspicious at first but eased up... he talked to the kids a few minutes ago and he said she seemed fine so again hopefully....

Topping is just you deciding where the cane will break in high winds and with the weight of snow. You don't need to do this to all of your roses. Some roses can handle winter better than others. If you are certain you are going to sustain damage, then it only makes sense to top the roses. Sterilize your pruners between cuts and there is no need to be very agressive. You'll still do your clean prune in the spring.

LOL, anyuta34 where the heck did you come from? lol, got any Rose advice?

I think I'll nip them back to 4 1/2 feet. I'll wait till all the leaves fall so they won't make any effort to sprout.
