My progressives are finally right, fingers crossed :)

But I had to go somewhere else.

After many weeks, two different pairs of glasses (frames and lens models) and much frustration, I still didn't have progressives that worked. There was no "sweet spot" for anything and they actually made my eyes feel srained. The optician was going to make another pair using my old distance prescription (the distance in the new glasses was actually worse than my old ones), but the doctor intervened last week and said he wanted me to try them for a longer period of time. That did it.

So, I went back to the folks who made glasses for me about two years ago. Family business, have been doing this forever. (Didn't go there originally because I needed an exam with a medical doctor and the adjoining store had a better selection of frames.)

Sat with the owner for more than an hour explaining my sob story. He said the glasses had been done correctly and felt my distance prescription might still be off, even though my ophthalmologist had rechecked it.

So, I saw their optometrist, who did a long exam using the old metal contraption with interchangeable lenses that you put on like glasses. Ended up changing my distance prescription slightly after much back and forth between us. (I have astigmatism in both eyes, BTW.)

I even asked the owner if he was sure he wanted to give this a try given my bad history with progressives and he said it was extremely rare for them not to work out.

Got the glasses yesterday and it's like night and day. No problems except for the normal adjustment stuff - like learning to not look down while walking. The distance is crisp and clear. Will try out the reading more this week at work.

Now I have to decide how to handle the first place because I've got hundreds of dollars invested in a pair of glasses I can't use. I'm sure this will turn into a fight because they've already gone through two frames and two sets of lenses. I'm sure the doctor intervened because he didn't want to spend any more money on me.

Anyway, thanks for suggesting I not give up. It was worth the extra time and effort!

glad it's finally working out.
As for the first optical shop....go back with the glasses that didn't work, with yout new glasses on your face.
If you have not yet paid for them....just hand them the glasses and say somethning like the glasses your lab wouldn't work for me.
If you have paid, that's a little stickier...tell them that the glasses won't work but you have found some that do. Ask if they can make the lenses just like the ones that work.
Just wondering....are the new glasses that work the same brand as the ones that didn't work??

Yes, same brand (Varilux Physio) as the second pair from the first store.

The first pair I got were Varilux Ellipse, which had to be used because of the smallish frame I chose. When those didn't work, they had me choose a larger frame with the Physio lenses. Neither worked because for whatever reason, the prescription didn't work.

As I recall, I had tomatoes ripening in late August, though I didn't sell any until I brought them to market on 9/4 (skipped last market day of August due to death in the family). It was a short season though due to late blight and also picking green tomatoes due to (false alarm) frost advisories a couple of times. I did have some ripen in the basement until mid-November, but most rotted (a lot infected with LB and others bacterial or fungal diseases that didn't show when they were green). I did manage to can quite a few, and frozen a couple gallon bags of slicers (mostly hybrids) and a gallon of cherry toms. I didn't see many tomatoes at market this summer - the guy up the road from me had Juliettes in late July or early Aug, and organic farm in Simsbury had Mountain Fresh at market starting in mid-Aug I think. The Juliettes were selling b/c they were early (relatively speaking), but the vendor who had Mountain Fresh and I weren't selling many in Sept, I don't know if people were just continuing to buy tomatoes at the grocery store, or if they'd found a local greenhouse source but nobody seemed to be excited about local field-grown tomatoes after Labor Day.

Well, well, positive thoughts and crossed fingers for you Dottie! I sure hope all works out. I've had a pipe dream for decades about moving to northern MN and I still check real estate listings occasionally. Found several places that were interesting and it never worked out. Usually wound up waiting so long that the place sold. Last one I found though really bugged me a bit. It was in Aurora, which isn't really the place I wanted to be, BUT, the price was right, it was a single level (with basement of course), very handicapped friendly, breezeway between house and attached garage, nice big lot... so I was packed and heading up to check it out and sure enough... it had sold. It's a good time to buy now so I wish them luck on getting a great deal and moving close to a great lady! Uh, don't suppose they'd have an extra room.... naw, spose they wouldn't! :D FWIW, the friend of mine who died of MRSA about a year ago had her summer place only about 12 miles from you Dottie. Her ex-stepson bought a small farm there and they built a little apartment on the side of the pole barn. I had been offered to stay there while I look for a place but those plans got a monkey wrench thrown into it too! Oh well, I look at it this way: If it's meant to be, it'll happen and if not, there's nothing I can do about it anyway. Good luck on your dream and your DD/DSIL's dream coming true! It's fun to think about it, isn't it? How quick would they be looking at moving?

I disagree with that^ statement. An old idea-sounds good but no basis in fact. Every leaf on a plant is a food-making factory. Very young plants need all the food-making factories they can get. Further, chemicals called auxins-a type of plant hormone-are produced in the growing tips of branches. These auxins "tell" the roots to grow. Cut off a lot of branch tips and all you're doing is slowing down the regeneration of a root system. A newly-tranplanted plant needs all the roots it can get, so don't hamper this by following an old and long-discredited notion. Further down the road-say in two years-you may well have reason to want to prune this tree. By then, it should be well rooted and will be able to take this. But not now. The best-really the only thing-a new transplant "needs" is careful attention to moisture. I know you guys had a ton of rain in many areas this winter-I was witness to some of these storms back in January in the Fort Myers area-but if it gets dry, you will want to soak the bejeesus out of the area, about once per week...and then leave it alone. More plants are killed by overattention than by neglect.

Keep the energy coming. I had a flare up a couple of hours ago. I think it does have something to do with blood sugar levels. But I am coping, and the fact that I was pain free for a couple of days gives me hope. I am functioning overall much better, I can vary my footwear, and my blood sugar levels have been exceedingly normal for a diabetic. The drugs help when I have a flare up, but I don't want to be on them forever. G*d bless you all!

Sue, I had the same experience, oddly not with my first pair of progressives but my most recent prescription. I went to a new opthalmologist and the script was just not right. I went back to have them rechecked and he changed the script. Still not good. Went to another doc in the same office -- even worse. By now my optician was ready to kill me because he had changed the lenses so many times. Then I gave up and just wore my old glasses.

Then I wanted some contact lenses which I wear onnly occasionally. A good friend recommended her doctor, so I gave her a try. Voila! Not only did I come out with the best fitting lenses I ever had, I also got a script for my regular glasses that work like a dream.

The tiniest bit of difference can make a huge difference in your vision. I swear I will never change my script again after that experience.

I'm so glad yours are finally working out. Isn't it a relief?
