Why are leaves turning yellow from the top of cane down?

I planted the climber Dreaming Spires this spring and it has done well. It has about 6 canes, 3-4 feet each being trained on a fence. It gets plenty of sun and I don't think that drainage is an issue.

A few weeks ago I noticed leaves turning yellow on one of the canes. They turned yellow from the top of the cane and spread downward until all were yellow, the cane turned tan and leaves fell off. Now it is happening to another cane. all others look healthy so far.

Anytime i had a yellow leaf issue, they started from the bottom of the plant. This is weird. Any ideas what the problem might be?

Mike, when i go home I will inspect my plant more closely. Maybe cane borers are the problem. Thanks for the tip. Shelley

Did you transplant it recently? If you did, it might be going through shock. It probably is also running out of energy for new healthier grow. I went through similar problem with my other berry. I kept them in the platic container from Wal-mart, they had been growing slow and the new leaves were not vibrant. I recently put them in ground, and mix the soil with some "Peat Moss", the new leaves are now looks better, I guess they get more new energy/nutrient now. Raspberry needs acidic soil, get some Peat Moss into your planting area, and get some soil acidifier powder from your local nursery, mix it with water then spray the plant and ground around the plant. It should improve within 2 weeks.

Put three ice cubes in a glass and let them melt. Use that amount of tepid water to water your plant. Orchids don't want cold feet. The saying is that you can't water an orchid enough, but you can water too often. So you can water with a lot more than the mass of three ice cubes. It's when you water again that matters. The medium should be almost dry. You might want to slip the plant out of the pot to check the roots. Hold the neck of the plant between your fingers and turn the plant upside down over some newspaper. Knead the pot to loosen it and slip it off. Check the roots. If they're dry or mushy you need to repot and correct your watering habit. If the roots look okay, slip the pot back on and turn the plant upright again. Don't keep your plant in the dark. It needs light. When Richardol suggested it may be in too much light, you should pull it back a few inches, not feet. Feel the leaves. If they're warm then it's too much light. If they feel normal then they're okay.

I'm not familiar with that variety's characteristics. The vendor is well known and to best of my recollection has a good reputation on this forum. Have you used any kind of sprays or treatments? How about your fertilizing and watering routine? Soil Conditions? I would assume if you have 25 other plants (assuming plumerias) you have a good system but thought I would still pose the questions. When you transplanted into the 7 gallon how did the root ball look? The tips look healthy from the pictures. I am not so sure that damp and cool nights could be a major factor. I would do two things...Make sure its not a something like a fungus or insect and start making some adjustments. Maybe relocate it in the yard to a warmer more sunny location or change your fertilizing routine to same quantity but in smaller, more frequent applications...monitor, adjust, and monitor some more. You can figure it out. Don't give up on it.

matt I don't know, but leaves usually shrivel and dry up if too dry. I don't use moisture meter (they are not that reliable, unless you have a better quality one); if I have any doubts I just stick a bamboo skewer deep into pot to check for moisture. Just checked my plant, there is 1 leaf that is yellowing - I am quite sure it is just old and is going to dry up and fall off. There are 3 big branches/stems on my plant, mostly 'naked', with leaves just at the top. It is constantly in bloom - I got it in 2012 and it never stopped blooming yet. It really needs to be repotted (still in pot & soil I got it in!), and also pruned, since there is no branching at all, and is getting too tall. Mike, I think it's possible that cane borers have been the problem. I cut the two affected canes down to just below where the problem areas were. The inside of the cane had this grey gooky stuff in it, not sure what it was but it sure did not look healthy. Anyway, all the affected parts were removed and I'll keep a close eye on the rest of the plant. Thanks for your help, Shelley

The gooky stuff is politely known as "frass," or less politely as worm poo. The larvae come from eggs deposited just below the growing tip back in the summer. Sometimes shoots will tell you about this by wilting when the rest of the shoots are not, or by going blind. Also, you can sometimes tell when a stem has been hollowed by squeezing it.

Michael G........gross. But...it's sure nice to know what was wrong with my rose. It gives me hope that by cutting off the affected parts, it will thrive once again.

Any idea why certain roses are chosen as hosts for these lovely creatures? I haven't seen this happen on any of my other roses.
