What to expect from a climbing rose against a house

I've been lurking on the Gardenweb for years(mostly on the cottage garden forum) but the time has come to break my silence to ask for advice

I am considering training a rose(cl. Eden or cl.New Dawn) up the side of my wooden garage. The side I can utilize faces west, gets sun from noon on and the soil is adobe clay. My house is about a mile from the beach and temperatures tend to be mild.

What can I expect from climbing roses? Do bugs become a problem? i.e use the rose as a staging ground for attacks in the house? Does the mass of the rose trap moisture against the house? Will the thorns damage the siding in spite of a trellis? Do I even have the proper environmental conditions to attempt this?

Thanks for all your collective wisdom
