What Rose Are You Expecting Big Things From This Spring?
Comments (24)I can't wait for the rose sold as Parks' Yellow Tea-Scented China (which it is not) to bloom again in the cemetery. Smells like grapefruit. Looks like roses for a wedding bouquet. A giant pile of flowers, and then it's done. I probably am going to miss most of the banksiae bloom in the cemetery this year - will be dealing with family business out of state - oh, what a shame to miss banksiae normalis, which goes 50 feet or more up a pine tree. I've been told it looks like a four-tier wedding cake (why are weddings on my mind today?) I don't really have any great expectations from my roses at home. Apparently, things are getting boring. I'm most looking forward to Iris sibirica 'Caesar's Brother' and the walking iris, Neomaric caerulea. Great companion plants. Comments (34)CI, TZ, SdlM all growing nicely now. I think this will be a good fragrance bed. I put Lion's rose in the back to add beauty and a good leafy background even though it isn't much on scent. I think if the base gets shaded by the others, it won't get disease. There's room to the right of Abe Darby for one more big rose. I think it's going to be Evelyn. Hopefully, it will work some magic for me. This is a good morning sun spot and gets shade in the hottest times of the day. My summer is a little hotter than Hoovb's but maybe it's close enough. I'm going to hope for the best. The only downside to this location is that it will take the full force of the Santa Ana wind from across the street. We are along the Santa Ana river channel and the wind blows strongly through the gap. It seems to be shifting later than Halloween now. I used to call it the Halloween Wind....See MoreWhat do you expect? What do your relatives expect?
Comments (16)When we go to mom and her dh's, we stay at their home because they have room for everyone. My dh and I share the cleaning/kid duty with no problems from anyone. I do basic cleaning while visiting but generally don't do deep cleaning. I would do what ever mom asked though. I feel I will be needed more as they grow older and I'm kind of looking forward to helping out. Now,,dh, he often does some heavy duty thing with mom's dh to help them get a complex job done. He enjoys that because it gives him something important to do and of course his help makes things better for his in laws. When my family visits, they stay in our finished basement so they can have some privacy. They can sleep in, read, watch tv, until they decide to come up and visit. It works for us. I've only had one "argument" with my FIL and mom's dh. Both times I left very quickly with out a word. I think everyone knows I don't put up with stupid crap more than one day. That's just the way I work. Life is to short to live with chaos....See MoreWhat do you do when your rose puts out HUGE canes?
Comments (12)haha - love the "awkward adolescence" analogy! I think I'll leave them and wait for the rest of the plant to catch up. It definitely looks a bit strange, but more than anything I'm happy the roses are taking off like this - they apparently didn't get the memo on "1st year sleep, 2nd year creep, 3rd year leap" since they seem to have skipped straight to year 3. :) Hopefully by next year the bushes will look a bit more uniform! I would be thrilled if Sunshine Daydream ends up being a 6-foot rose - it's the one that started my obsession with roses (those perfect creamy yellow blooms, sigh). And at the rate it's going, Lady of Shalott is going to be a 10-footer at my house! :) Thanks everyone for the great comments!...See Moreminflick
