7 foot tall double knockout canes?? could this be a 'climber'

Hello all, we planted 3 double knockouts at our house in Atlanta spring, 2008. We haven't done any pruning. The particular site is quite shady, only getting full sun a few short hours a day at most.

These double knockouts are behaving in what this "new" gardner believes to be an unusual way.

We have about 24 knockouts at our house near Vidalia and a few at my Mother's house outside Vidalia. All have the typical "bush" or "shrub" habit I am accustomed to seeing in the knockouts.

Does anyone have any idea why the are growing HIGH instead of WIDE???

My wife doesn't really want me to prune back the height so I told her maybe we could try training them in trellis style.

But, this gives rise to other questions. If we take the main canes and train them "horizontally" at 45 degree angles, will the "laterals" act like laterals on a climber and produce flowers?

Interesting to watch these grow.
