'Love' quills??? I did not know that. I adore roses that quill. And it blooms better than most of your other roses? I'm gonna have to investigate this rose further . . . You want to give it away? If we were closer, I'd ask you to give it to me. Sigh . . .

From what I've seen quite a few of the tea roses do this. I've been very careful not to buy the ones that do because I'm not a great fan of that shape either. I wasn't aware that some of the modern roses do it too.

Yes, it is very vigorous for us here in central New York State. Got it from Pickering I think, several years ago. The stems are very thick and strong too.
Definitely look it up, I'm sure you'd love it. It's a great rose, if you like that look.

Maybe my tastes are odd...I feel the same way about mayonnaise (vile stuff!), but most people love it! LOL

I don't mind the quills at all. (I went to HMF to see what you are talking about.) However, vegetative centers really get to me. To me they are like overgrown nose hairs.

I hate it. Double KO is awful as far as I'm concerned. It represents the most ugly open for possible in my book.

Maybe that's it, Carol. I'm very laid back in many ways too. Those quills remind me somehow of an uptight, crabby old lady with a high, whiny, complaining voice. Wow, where did I get that one from? LOL

Sammy-love the nose-hair description! I haven't come across too many vegetative centers, thankfully. I was afraid maybe Rouge Royale would do this (read somewhere that it might, but it never has). I also sometimes think about getting Samaritan (Lawrence of Arabia) but I have read it gets veggie centers. Although the photos of Samaritan on helpmefind.com w/veggie centers are somehow kind of pretty to me.

Mauirose-which do you hate-mayo, quills or both? I don't even know what mayo tastes like, but it smells so disgusting I wouldn't try it EVER. My poor kids (all grown up now) probably never tasted it til they traded a sandwich in elementary school. I couldn't imagine making my kid eat the stuff (or anything like creamy salad dressing, tartar sauce, or sour cream either!)

Mauirose, our oldest is moving to Kauai (sp) in a few weeks, and going to a friend's wedding on Maui. Sounds so gorgeous.

Amandahugg-I didn't realize KOs would have that problem. Yeah, I think quills and brown stamens wide open are such a turn-off. Although I don't mind singles like Dainty Bess or Golden Wings, etc. They look fresh and innocent, but most look dirty and old.

I so don't like quills!!! Even if I absolutely love the color or the smell, if it quills I won't have it. I too have "Love", my husband liked it so he bought it. It does quill somewhat but since I already didn't like it, it's no big deal. Eventually this rose will "go away" from my garden lol.

I don't like them either. I try to note any photos in the gallery that show quilled roses so that I don't accidentally order those! Trouble is, some don't do that right away when they open and in the bud stage they're pretty. I've been fooled a time or two. But thinking about it, I'm not sure *why* I don't like them....and I do like mayonaise and salad dressing (but hold the tartar sauce or sour cream.) So what does that say about me? LOL!

DH and I both loathe celery. Most people like it but I can't even stand the smell...and yes, it does have a smell. This is a celery free zone. And I'll have a spicy bloody mary since you offered.

I always associated that shape with the roses from my grandmother's yard. I remember seeing painted roses in a vase like that from the 50's. It seems nostalgic to me like other things from that time.

The thing I don't like in roses is when the mature petals get blotchy and spotty. I want them to retain the even tone right through to when they drop off. I don't mind fading color, but I dislike the little blemishy spots.

Quilling is fine with me. I agree with kittymoonbeam--blotchy bothers me more. I prefer the faders and the quillers to the blotchers.

I agree about the blotchy. Rio Samba is a beautiful rose that had three stages. Around here it raced through the first two stages, and kept the third - blotchy stage for a week. It is gone.

I don't care for roses that quill. It's my mother's fault. When I was a kid, every time we would walk past a scraggly, uncared for quilled rose that mainly served as a trellis for bermuda grass she would shudder and snort "cabbage rose. Hmph!". I don't know where she got that name for them, but I guess it must have worked its way into my aesthetic psyche, because I lived forty years before I planted ANY rose.

I'm still not sure what exactly is considered 'quilling' despite Carol's photo... Here is a rose photo which exhibits folding of the petals into pointed triangular shape as the rose opens: Would this be considered 'quilling'? What do you call this 'form' then?

Yep, that's it.
Some roses are even MORE quilled though...like flat, pointy ribbons on a bow, open in the center, exposing their stamens with no shame! Thanks for the photos though. Beautiful roses on the link!

Hosenemesis-I don't know why your mom would've called them "cabbage roses" either...cabbage roses are one of my favorite forms...the old fashioned types are so pretty!
I don't grow the true type, but do love the Austins and Romanticas that grow in this shape.
