Anyone know where I can get my hands on a few roses in CA?
Comments (3)Guerrero Rose Farm in Ontario is pretty good about letting you know on the phone if they have the roses on your list before making the drive over there. They are on Euclid off the 60 or the 10, not too far from you I think. (909)988-0015...See MoreDoes anyone know where to get clematis seeds?
Comments (4)The best advice I can give you is to collect your own seed from neighbors or friends at the end of the season when the seedheads are fully ripe and brown. I have tried ordering seed from EBAY, but none ever germinated, meaning that either the seed was old or was collected before it had fully ripened.I would never order from EBAY again. Remember, if you are planting clematis seed from Large Flowered Hybrids you will not get the same flower from it's seedling. The flowers from these hybrids CAN be VERY different than the parent/s. This is how new hybrids are 'born'. Raising Large Flowered Hybrids can take an average of 6-24 months for germination, so you must be very patient. On the other hand, a few of the species types can sometimes be very quick to germinate. Suzy...See MoreDoes anyone know what’s going on with my rose?
Comments (17)Jena, my Perle d’Or did the bud drop thing it’s first year, the whole year. A lot of my roses also had chlorosis, including Perle d’Or, even though they were getting regular Magnesium-sulfate and I was alternating between Miracle Grown and a seaweed fertilizer, all in the hopes of curing them of chlorosis. Mostly it was the Polyanthas and Multifloras that had this problem. Finally I sent in a sample for a soil test. I had plenty of all the minerals and nutrients except for Nitrogen (which I already knew since its obviously devoid of any organics and so I was fertilizing) and absolutely zero Manganese (Mn) detected. Once I put a teaspoon of Manganese Sulfate dissolved in a gallon of water on each rose last fall the chlorosis completely disappeared and Perle d’Or stopped dropping buds. I will now do this once or twice a year; not too often since Mn is a minor nutrient and too much can be toxic. The Miracle grow I was using did have trace Mn, but somehow it wasn’t enough. I wonder if my soil was just binding it up? This just demonstrates that bud drop could be due to lack of an essential nutrient. It might not necessarily be Manganese for you. But since you mention the Kellogg soil might not be that great, I would give it a nice dilute liquid fertilizer once a week and see if it cures it....See MoreIs this Dakota Redwing? Comments (7)Thank you so much, Sheila! Your DR's foliage looks a bit glossier, but the fresh red growth on one of my plants is somewhat glossy and the leaves' other characteristics resemble your plant's. These 2 have been in a box for a few days, so that may alter the appearance of their foliage a bit. Their canes are thornless like your plant's. That's not only a promising indication, it also makes DR lovely to handle! The habit looks like it's off to a similar start, too. Well, here's hoping! I am so looking forward to seeing blooms like yours! Limited space and budget is an understatement around my place, so I am swapping Oshun's spot for DR and passing along my small Oshun to John for his collection. He's adopting a number of my roses so that I can make room, and properly care for, for the Bardens, Ruperts, Gallicas, etc. that I am preserving. It's been so hectic around my place the last few years, and my attention has been so basic, that ALL my roses are probably begging me to send them to John's lavish attention! :-D.
