Shovel pruning a heritage rose?

lbuzzell

For the first time, I'm considering shovel pruning a "found" heritage rose. We've had "Frances Grate's Tea" for about 7 years. The bush and bloom are both good but it has one fatal flaw: the lovely blooms barely last one minute on the bush or the vase and crisp up almost immediately.

I thought about giving it away but then wondered why I would sic this rose on anyone else, even if it's a long-time survivor. But the thought of removing it and possibly destroying its long heritage seems unthinkable.

What should I do?
