New Rose Name Tags

I finally finished my name tag project. I ordered the stands from Paw Paw labels. I made my own labels from my Brother PTouch Labler. Since the stands were metal and the label color I picked was black with gold lettering, I spray painted the stands black before putting on the labels (the stands were wider than the labels and I wanted it to blend.

About four years ago when my son was working for a small printing firm, we tried a label experiment that I'm really happy with. Began by formatting a document with all the information I wanted on the label, and my son did the necessary conversions [added a decorative border] and arranged to have them printed onto a sturdy material used for outside banners. The material is UV stabilised and likewise the inks used. Info - name, date, breeder, provenance, rootstock etc fitted comfortably and legibly on a label of about 1Â½" x 4Â½", but the size is entirely flexible depending on the size of the font and the amount of info needed. The labels were guillotined and I added sturdy metal eyelets and tied them to metal stakes with wire. So far they are standing up to the elements well - over four years they have shown no signs of fading, tearing or deteriorating. There's just a little curling but the information is very legible. I don't know about the actual cost - this was one of those jobs done in exchange for pruning, fertilising and mulching the printer's roses. There were a few things to keep an eye on - like the number of characters in a row - if there were too many, the line would wrap and the extra line caused problems of alignment when using the automatic guillotine. If any of you have experience or contacts in the printing industry, it may be worth costing.

I think you'd be underpricing. I've watched those pet tag machines being used and it does take a few minutes and some attention and skill to make a tag. The cheapest you can get these tags (for dogs) is going to be about $3.50-$4.00 and while those folks are making a profit, they are producing a relatively huge number and can cut their profit margin quite a bit, i.e. cost is probably pretty close to price. Even if that includes labor cost you won't be paying, you're going to find yourself working for maybe a buck an hour over costs, and it will get to you -- especially if you get an order to tag, say, Robert in VA's garden. Now it would be kind of cute to have a bone shaped rose tag... to mystify prosperity. The bone shaped ones usually can fit the longest line length. -Greta (what I don't know about roses, I do know about dogs)

Thank you, mariannese. Vap also mentioned it. It's an important invention to honor, but I wonder if the inventor's name might have worked better... I've seen a few photos, it's a gorgeous rose, indeed. I thought it would be fun to plant 'Honey Dijon' with some other foodstuff-named plants, but it turns out to be a much more distinguished name than the original 'Baby Poop'. Oh, boy! No, I buy what's called a "paint pen" at Michael's craft store. Sharpie started making a no fade marker a few years ago which faded the same as their regular " permanent "markers. I noticed in the store last year they have come out with an oil based marker now, and I imagine it would also hold up. Sections of mini blind do work very well as a label. Pencil works fine on those, but a bold, dark paint pen is easier to see from a little distance. I tried the oil base pen when I bought some zinc markers on ebay. The seller said that labels written on with oil based pens hold up about ten years outside.

Those look great. I'm looking for labels too and have been considering a labeller like that. Have you heard anything about how long they're suppossed to last? How big are they?

The labels are 3 inches wide by 1.5 inches high. The largest tape my label maker uses is 1 inch. The labels are supposed to be weather proof indoor/out. I've used them on other items and haven't had the come off.

The stands have long tines on them, so it depends on how far into the ground you stick them. If you go on the PAW PAW website, they have different sizes.

I got the idea when I was working on doing labels for all our DVDs. I finally figure out how to use the database function so I don't have to retype everything.

Wow that's impressive! That really looks classy. Was that black tape UV resistant? I've only used the black-letters-on-white-tape option.

It doesn't specify UV, but says indoor/outdoor. And they are laminated, so I would think they'd be ok. I guess time will tell.

Very nice! My plastic markers are never legible after the winter and the chipmunks like to munch on them anyway (I have no idea why - maybe we just have weird rodents). I may have to try your idea out.

I'm impressed. As I get older, I need to prepare for the day when I won't be able to remember which rose is which.

Harry, part of the reason I tagged them is so DH would know who was who. I thought about mixing up the tags just to confuse him. LOL!

They are just great, buford. I bought a bunch of Eon markers but haven't had the time to label them. I'm going to paint mine green, I think, and use clear labels. But, then, I saw some ready made labels that had the markers painted the color of the rose so I haven't decided yet. Sounds like a good project for January.

The labels are laminated plastic. They are the tape type labels from a label maker. The one I have links to a computer so you can use an Excel list to import the names into the template.

I use Avery clear address labels on Paw Paw markers. My labels are more functional than elegant--I list the approximate date of planting, type and color of rose, and nursery/source, in addition to the variety name. Hopefully this will make it easier to ID a rose should it not turn out to be what it was labeled.

I'm going to use the Avery clear labels, too. I went with Eon markers because they don't have the sharp corners that the Paw Paw markers do. BTDT.

Ptouch makes extra strength adhesive labels designed for "harsh environments." I've been using them for a couple of years without any sun, weather or water damage. Great product. I can hook the labeller up to my computer. I think the tape code is TZS.

You guys are the bomb!!! My pretty copper labels got dark enough it was even hard to see the etching (I didn't make it real deep).

Last year I thought I had solved the problem with the Sharpie Silver metalic pens (also the bomb for other things) because the ink is hard to get off when we use them at work. Sadly, the darkening of the copper continues and I need just the right angle to read them. I've been afraid to use liquid copper cleaner in case the Sharpie comes off (and I may have reused some of the etched ones, doh!).

Now I think I can clean them and the label will also keep at least the copper under the label oxidized free?

Harryshoe, that's pretty funny, but age doesn't help anything when the roses are in pots and the dogs think the tags are fun to play with!!!
