Finally got all my shredded leaves ready! I think...

I have been working on it for a while now lol. I have to use on of those leaf blower/shredders. I finally have (I hope) enough leaves for the winter. I have 6 big black bags full of nicely shredded already to go leaves. I have a small yard, so I'm sure most of you have a lot more! How much leaves do you collect for your garden? Truckloads? lol

Now, my neighbors really think I'm certified! lol They just have no clue, absolutely no clue, how great leaves are for gardens and lawns.

Congratulations! I want every bag of leaves I see on the curb, but having a small suburban back yard I probably have all I can handle. I have wanted a leaf shredder for a long time but my shredder is an old fashioned lawn mower, the kind that is people-powered, which I mow back & forth over the leaves dumped on the patio & then scoop them back into bags with the snow shovel. Necessity is the mother of invention & I am the aunt, I guess. Any way, it is more labor intensive but at least I feel like I'm burning a lot of calories when I do it.

Yes, Leaves are wonderful......I have been driving by bags and bags and bags of leaves on the side of the road for 2 weeks now. My husband picked up 26 very large bags from the side of the road, and I am seeing more and more,,,but I have enough. I have about 38 bags full now. I still hate to drive by them without picking them up. If I knew I had enough greens to mix with them, I would pick them all up.

Forgottenone: If my garlic is any indication, you've got it backwards on the flowering. All of my softnecks produced scapes and none of the hardnecks produced a scape. WJB2: for future reference, wait until your plants have lost their bottom 3 - 4 leaves (dried up and turned brown), stop irrigating and when the ground is dried and not wet enough to stick badly to the bulbs then, lift the plants with a turning fork and carefully remove them from the ground. Now it's off to cleaning and curing as described by others previously.

I'm in the 'apply the leaves when they are available' category. Since most of the leaves are in the backyard, they are only applied to the backyard beds - which are woodland-type beds so the plants are happy with the leaves (and pine needles). Most of the leaves are from the white ash so are relatively small. They get raked straight into the beds without being chopped first. The other main backyard tree is a red oak. About 30% of those leaves hang on the tree until early March. Those ones, when they fall, collect in the south alley and along the south fence so get vacuumed up, shredded, and dumped on beds in the spring. When/if we lose the ash, there will just be pine needles and oak leaves to deal with. I doubt that will change how we deal with them. In the front garden there is not a significant leaf-fall and we don't bother mulching there. We do leave a lot of the current year's folage to die back naturally and feed the soil. Other than that, the front garden survives just fine without mulching with anything. All the leaves in this picture were added to the beds by the end of October..

I, too, understand about the American Girl thing. My daughter has a trunk of beautiful clothes for her AG dolls, all purchased from her grandmother. I will *never* be the one to give any of this away or she will be posting one day about how she can't forgive ME! As for getting rid of husband's stuff...this is sort of along the same lines. My husband loves car races and has a favorite tee shirt he wears only when he attends a race. It's sponsored by Marlboro. Well, one day a telemarketer called and I picked up the phone (before caller I.D.!) and they wanted to do a survey on what kinds of cigarettes my husband smokes. Thoroughly disgusted, I exclaimed, "My husband has NEVER smoked." End of discussion. I was so proud of the fact that I ended THOSE phone calls. Awhile later my husband wondered why Marlboro wasn't sending him free racing tee-shirts and stuff anymore. Somehow we got on the conversation about that phone call and how I couldn't believe they thought he smoked. My husband looked at me with this incredulous look and said, "You didn't tell them I don't smoke, did you?" Yep. He was so upset and STILL is. Now they won't send him anything because they know the truth and he is still mad about it! So he has that one racing shirt that has little holes starting in the neckline but he refuses to part with it. I don't think you guys are getting the problem here. Matching isn't the issue! As much as I've ranted over it. I've found 10 colors that I absolutely love and are perfect. Until .... I get them home in the natural light. THEN, they turn turquoise, teal, or any way a green can blue. It's the light. I can't take that to any store I know of and have them match it. I've taken 10 paint chips to the store which they've made perfectly. Bring it home? Blueish in some lights. Ick. As far as the sheen, I like it in this instance. It's woodwork and the dining room can be somewhat darkened because of the porch outside. I understand the issues with a glossier paint. For being pissed? I was annoyed that yet again I was finding I was given the lip service "no" without someone actually taking the initiative to figure out the possibilities. So many can't think on their own. "No" is a good answer when "no" is the only answer. Even then, there are options. When my paint man actually looked up the formula, the high gloss was a base option. It wasn't a question of an inferior product. I am very open to information as to the whys of something. Automatic nay-sayers piss me off. I lived with one, who addressed every idea with, "The problem with that is...." rather than, "hmmm.. let's see what we can do." I choose to face all this crap I deal with optimistically, believe it or not. Or I'd probably kill myself. Or them. Even my Multi-Purpose Man has quit saying no. He asks, "Tell me how you see it?" BTW. So far, in the lights of two days, the color remains.... [drum roll] PERFECT!!! Thank you. [bowing left and right]

Well, then I have something like 24 whole leaf bags! Cool! I'm sure I'll find plenty of use for them, if the neighbors don't want them lol.
Mowing the leaves is also a wonderful way to shred them. A lot of people do it that way. Good job! A lot of the leaves I got were shredded already by a mower (the neighbors blow them across the street and the park manager runs them over with his big ride on mower, that leaves me to go back and collect them up already shredded lol!

We have been mulch mowing the leaves from the trees growing in the church lawn for about 10 years now and we still have people that try to tell us, including a couple that have worked at doing that, that we will kill the grass even though every year since we started the grass has grown greener, thicker, and faster. When growing conditions are good, not too hot and dry, the grass now grows fast enough that we really need to cut it more than once a week because it is too tall for a once a week cutting, and the mower deck cannot be set any higher.

flowersnhens, you don't have to have greens:
left to their own devices, autumn leaves will decay & turn into sweet-smelling leaf mold, a wonderful amendment & insulation for your soil.
