Not letting a climber climb...

Good idea? Bad Idea? I just took my Don Juan back to 3, 3" canes because the leggyness was bothering me. It was going up and up and up but it was THIN! I was tying canes that were putting out canes that they just couldn't support in a million years. The trellis was a thing of the past, and I was tying to the house trying to keep it from tipping over in the rain.

I had about 5-7 canes that were about 7 feet tall, and I started waterfalling them to try to get a little more foliage and bloom out of them, but finally got frustrated and cut it all back.

I'm trying to stimulate lower growth to fill out the front of the plant.

What should I be doing?

I'm thinking my mistake came in not cutting it farth enough back last year, so it started the season with 4' canes.

Is there still enough time in the season to get some fill in?
