The five roses you could do without!
Comments (131)Aaron: What are the qualities in Moonlight Romantica that you don't like? Thanks for any info. I thought about buying it for the vigor, too many rabbits here that devour short roses. Agree with you on weird long cane shooting out out a round bush, saw that with Cream Veranda in a pot for $5 at HomeDepot .. sniffed that and it was odd fruity for me. No regrets not buying, I am spoiled by Marie Pavie's perfect round bush. Carol: Thank you. My roses are healthy thanks to alkaline clay. In my last house with acidic black clay and FULL SUN, roses were blackspot-fest & wimpy. In my present house of alkaline black clay & very shady garden, leaves and blooms are pale but healthy. I find that at alkaline pH, roses bloom well if given alfalfa meal & sulfate of potash & SOLUBLE fertilizer. I put too much garden lime in the planting hole of band-size-Marie-Pavie, and leaves turn pale, but it pumped out 5 buds (fertilized with alfalfa meal & soluble fertilizer). In contrast, another bigger-gallon-Marie-Pavie planted MG-potting soil, fertilized with MG-soluble for roses refused to bloom for months even with dark-green leaves. The pot was too acidic with accumulated rain-water. Click on below chart to see all the major nutrients are less available at pH below 5, and rain-water here pH is 4.5 (same with the East Coast): Below is a map of USA showing the pH of rain:...See MoreCompare Heritage with Scepter'd Isle
Comments (22)Heritage was the first rose that got me hooked in Austin roses. Mostly clean lush green foliage. A lemony scent that wafts around. Yes, the petals drop very quickly but there are lots of flowering buds waiting to be open. It also have octopus arms - canes that sprout longer than others. But its still beautiful because the canes are flexible, the leaves very nice looking and has few thorns. So with these merits, why wasn't t I satisfied with Heritage and made me go searching for other DA roses? Its because at that time I wanted a rose with deeply cupped bloom form with many petals neatly arranged inside the cup like a piece of art. Such bloom form can only be found in DA florist roses, but luckily over the time I am enchanted by Evelyn, Claire Rose, Tea Clipper, Mayor of Casterbridge, Jude the Obscure and Munstead Wood. Will I grow Heritage again? Maybe if I have a big garden. But i think i have outgrown it. The Generous Garden and Gentle Hermonine resemble like Heritage but both roses are not avaliable in my country. I wish we could have the Generous Garden - looks so scrumptious in photos! I never really consider Sceperd Isle because I don't like the name and the upright roses-sometimes cupped and other times too opened and blouswy. Plus the medium pink is not as soothing than Heritage shell pink which can look delicate and soft to it. Heritage makes a good rose for a cottage garden setting. Very simple and calming look. If you want some "acrobats" in your garden, i.e roses with complex petals arrangements go for Evelyn, The Generous Garden, St Swithun Jude the Obscure etc....See MoreAustins I Never Hear About on this Forum
Comments (33)I have Crocus Rose. I think it is its 4th year now. It really had a bunch of flowers this year. It has taken at least 3 years to get going. This rose is mostly a cream color with some yellow in it. Mine is right about 4 ft in height and about 3.5 ft wide. It needs spraying attention regularly because it will blackspot badly if you ignore it. The foliage on mine is rather small in spite of its diet. The flowers are not as big as I would like, but they do smell good despite not being strongly scented, and they do have some lasting power. This rose was one of the few in my garden that was as good as untouched by the horrendous Easter freeze we had last year. It just seemed to pick itself up and get going. It bloomed reasonably well last year and has gotten off to a better start this year. At first I thought it might be a tossable, but since it is now doing better I will keep this one. It now outblooms some of my other roses....See MoreI need a pollinator for a Highclere holly (Sceptre)
Comments (24)Wow, thanks for the picture. Maybe not quite as big but looks better than the one at McLean Nurseries. The problem with pollination could be a paucity of non-native, earlier blooming male hollies. I have an 'Ajax' for all my non-opaca hollies and it bloomed really well this year, the fruit set on 'Hohman', 'James G Esson', etc. appears to be tremendous. I officially declared my 'Scepter' dead and pulled it out. However it was clearly an issue with establishment, deer damage, and possibly soil not draining well enough. The plant was very spindly going into both cold winters and the 2nd finished it off. On a positive note my Ilex vomitoria is vigorously regrowing. Funny observation about hollies. I'd noticed both in my own garden and at Rutgers that birds just don't eat Koehneanas like 'Hohman' (which is actually from a slightly different cross) 'Wirt L Wynn' and 'Ruby'. Out of curiosity I tasted a 'Hohman' berry. I was surprised, it wasn't super bitter seeming. There were no opaca berries left to compare because the birds ate them all long ago. Apparently some other factor is involved besides taste. (Yes, birds have very few taste buds but I suppose something bitter enough would still discourage them.)...See MoreUser
