Heritage vs. Scepter'd Isle for zone 5?
Comments (28)Ruthie,Tamora is also one of my favourites. I don't understand why he would not put it in his latest book. Randy, I ordered Pretty Jessica for this spring after PATRICK raved about her and then said she was being "replaced". Doesn't make sense to me, but I will see how she does in my garden. (Oh, and besides RDV coming this spring, I've also put Gruss An Achen (sp?) on my list, due to your lovely photos and wonderful descriptions. Thank you. And I do mean that sincerely:) Judith...See MoreHeritage
Comments (25)Thank you all for the advice and comments. I appreciate it. I have decided against placing Heritage where I had originally thought. I don't think there is enough space there and I don't want to always be worrying that it is too crowded width-wise. I found another spot, close by but slightly wider, and I think that will be a good place for the rose. When you guys say "almost thornless", how "almost" are we talking? The plant I have isn't crazy thorny like some roses can be, but there are thorns. They are spaced fairly far apart, but still thorns. Not like Reines Des Violettes, which I consider basically thornless. Is Heritage supposed to be like RDV, or are there some thorns? I want to make sure I have the correctly labelled rose here :) DublinBay - Scepter'd Isle looks beautiful as well, and I always like compact suggestions, but I had already bought Heritage (impulse buy) and just need to find the right place to put it. But next time I need a narrower pink rose, that's definitely a great suggestion! :)...See MoreCan't decide --Sharifa asma, scepter'd isle or jubilee
Comments (6)I have all three. Remember, JC just came out only a year or two ago so it's impossible to talk about long term characteristics. Sharifa - the best scent of the three. Beautiful blooms, but not very many of them, even in the flush, at least for me. Here's Sharifa: http://www.pbase.com/tivoli/image/39312178 I do have some Sharifa's in this link, which shows a good flush, and other images, but I don't think that flush is typical, I think it was a lucky year. http://www.pbase.com/tivoli/austin_english_roses Scepter'd Isle - a myrrh scent, quite nice. A crazy number of blooms during the flush and decent after that. A beautiful, sort of caged framework of canes that are almost always self supporting except maybe from a bad, windy storm and then they prop back up again. I wish I had the time to get an image of the bush, I can't right now. Well, here's two, the bush shot one is the one on the right. Gruss an Achen is the one on the left. Not a great picture, but it gives you some sense. The other image is just a bunch of buds and some new flowers, but look at all the buds and I have more of that type of image with a zillion buds. http://www.pbase.com/tivoli/image/98830392 http://www.pbase.com/tivoli/image/81007052 Jubilee Celebration - I really do love this bloom. It's beautiful and has beautiful, rich color. I don't think it has a strong fragrance. Can't say much else about it, it's too new. Here is a link that might be useful: Scepter'd Isle...See MorePretty Jessica vs scepter d'isle austin rose
Comments (10)Opps, this is a bit late, but I would say its Scepter'd Isle. Its definately not Pretty Jessica. I grow PJ, and it really is a gobular style bloom ,quite large for the size of the plant, and the bush itself is a fairly upright grower- the fragrance is a very "old rose" style too. I dont grow Scepter'd Isle, but I was just at a rose garden last weekend that has them both; was considering getting SC myself, as its quite different...See Morehoovb zone 9 sunset 23
