Rose ID, and bug ID

Hi, I hope someone can help me with this...

I have an old shrub rose whose flower buds get eaten before they open - here's a pic of the blossom and a closeup of the bugs (aphids? scales?) - the buds turn brown and rot away, or dry and drop. I'd be very grateful if you could suggest a remedy, and also guess the variety of rose. Some notes to describe it: about 5ft high shrub, blooms once in early July, very strongly scented, pale bubblegum pink flowers 3-4in. diameter, green bark on young stems, tends to flop a bit, not many needles, leaves light green and not glossy or wrinkled. Quite common in old gardens here.

The insects look like aphids. I've never seen aphids kill flower buds, so I wonder if they are the direct cause? And the rose appears to be what is known in the US as "Banshee," apparently the same as the rose grown in Sweden as 'Minette' or Rosa suionum. And if that's the case, their buds will "ball" in damp weather, rotting away as you describe, independent of the aphids.

The new book-form special issue of Rosa Mundi (journal of the Heritage Rose Foundation and available through their website) has an article on "Banshee," as well as one on old roses in Sweden which discusses this rose there.

I am new on it and it was my first time starting a post and uploading a picture here, so, as you might have noticed, I had some problems with it! I also was thinking about Botrytis, so it is great that you mentioned it too. Once more, THANKS a lot! PETALOID THANK YOU too, because I think you have identified exactly the rose I posted. I also thought about ´Mrs. Foley Hobbs´ (1910) and ´Souvenir de Pierre Notting´ (1891). There are in HMF many pictures that are extremely similar, but the pictures of ´Mlle. De Sombreuil´ from Jerod are almost the same than mines. If you have some time, please check them anytime and tell me what you think about these other two varieties. ps.: by the way, have you seen the other white blended rose I have posted to identify?. Maybe you are lucky again! :D

Need some help ID'ing a yellow rose bush?

Very difficult to id with only a few photos. Could be Golden Showers, but seems to have too many petals and be a bit too bright yellow in my own experience. Golden Showers also shatters very quickly, a day or two in my experience, so if the blooms last longer, then perhaps you can rule GS out. But then we will all be just guessing and roses vary depending on climate, location, and many other things. My personal first impression is that it resembles 'Lichtkönigin Lucia' a wonderful Kordes rose from the mid 60's that was widely grown. But there are many other possibilities. Trying to identify a mystery rose is not an exact, or simple process. Good luck, but an exact ID is unlikely. Cheers, Rick

I would say it probably isn't Just Joey, either, which seems to have more petals than your rose, too. I just know, I want one of these. I love its delicacy and subtle color. Wow--I have never had the luck to land a rose this lovely by accident. Diane

I agree -- it looks like my own Banshee here in California that originally came from Prentiss, Maine. Apparently this rose can be found all over the world.

Hi Michael, I've posted here before, when I tried to ID two other roses.. I usually lurk at the landscape design forum.
My Banshee (let's call it that) has managed to open a few more blooms, looks like a good year for it - it is getting more sunlight after I removed a large lilac this spring, maybe that helps to reduce rotting.
