Lux, Mrs. B.R. Cant mildewed some when she was little.
As a mature plant, she's clean here in our little pocket of Mildew-Land.

I think the nicest climbing white Noisette I know of is "Setzer Noisette."
It has all the virtues of the Blush Noisette family, in an upright, mannerly, continuous-blooming climber.
She has no disease issues here at all.
The downside is that we will probably have some to offer at the Sacramento City Cemetery Open Garden sale,
but not until then, and of course, it's not in commerce.

My new plant of Setzer Noisette from the last Sac Cemetery Sale is showing a bit of blackspot and I'm right across the SF Bay from Luxrosa. Although I probably have more shade as a contributing factor. But I do have a high blackspot tolerance.

I've had good results from Noisettes here and can't wait for the first buds of my new Phil Edinger's Noisette from Vintage to bloom. Leaves are nice and clean.

Luxrosa, my Souv de Francois Gaulain (not from Ashdown) is a baby, only in the ground a month. Never had any mildew in the spring. No fungus of any kind on him. His flowers so far have been magenta, seemingly with a silveryness to the edges. He's real low to the ground so I haven't examined him closely. He's suffered with balling until lately but like I said, he's very immature and has a lot of petals. Not sure about his fragrance yet. But I was excited to get a "red" Tea.

My Mrs B R Cant did not come from Ashdown and is on fortuniana rootstock, but she is bulletproof here - except thrips make her ball. Yuck. But she's not alone. I would say she's the toughest rose I have - so far. She has a strong lovely sweet fragrance.

I do have 'Bryan Freidel Pink Tea' and is a very good rose. To me she recalls the Cochet family of roses. Very similar to Maman Cochet but smaller in size, blooms tend to ball with wet days.

It tells on Ashdown website that they shipped until June 1 then will not resume shipping until September 1. So how are you expecting a rose in June unless there was a delay of some kind?

You're welcome. I'll try to get through on phone tomorrow. I hope the ones I've picked out are still left, quite a few of a couple.

I beat this subject to death, but it is a major issue with me. Only one I picked out might be a Jap beetle magnet because the others are once bloomers and should be done by June 29 when they usually start chomping here. Their first preference so far is anything with yellow/orange/pinks w/yellow mixture, in the sun. Oops, they like Awakening, no yellow I can see in that one.

Dare I ask you what you do about Jap beetles or are you lucky enough not to get many? So I'm a little worried about more roses to fight those things which really wore me down last year.

I'm reluctantly going to try Sevin this year, but won't use any product with imidacloprid in it, kills bees, unless I spot spray just the bloom and cut it off right away. I'm not using soapy water as my major line of defense in the heat of the summer, have enough else to worry about. Even spraying will be hard to do every 4 days, hope I can cut it back to once a week. It's become kind of an obsession with me; if there's one out there, I want to hunt it down and kill it, don't obsess about other rose ailments & bugs, just put up with it. I won't spray the once bloomers unless they start showing up on those, too, shouldn't need to unless things get worse.

I know most of my options for grub control in my zone, so don't bother about that part of it. Appreciate your sticking around to help us here.

We use a product called Bye Bye Beetles which is part of the Peter Beales Complete Rose Care Line. It's natural and it's a repellent. We used it last year on the entire nursery. I sprayed three times over 5 weeks (we had little rain so I'd expect to apply more in a rainy year - like once a week). It worked great. Far less beetles than we'd had in the past.

Thanks, Paul. I think I'd feel safer using that, wouldn't have to worry about protecting myself so much which makes me procrastinate. Will give them a call because there's barely enough time B4 they start. Plus I can spray, preferably on overcast days when bees are out, am not an early morning person and after sundown could trip and fall more easily esp in one bad place.

As a second line of defense if they swarm I can use my last bottle containing the imidacloprid, will immediately cut off the bloom but zap the beetles, can live w/o some blooms for those weeks but this way I might be able to keep some going and not cut all the buds off. And I can use soapy water now and then if I have to.

Not too happy w/my sprayer but better than nothing. It jets nice, but for fan spray you only pump a few times, too much pumping. Jet gives full coverage just takes longer and takes more stuff.

Maybe I can borrow my son's professional sprayer and just not fill it so full. Not your problem :-).
