sooo many basal breaks!

My Father just called and said he figured out what happened to his Sunstruck. Little background here, early spring, this year, his Sunstruck produced many basal breaks some 3/4 of an inch around. They seemed to be growing a foot a day. (I was very jealous!) Everything looked very healthy and then the older canes foliage started looking yellow and brown and falling off and canes started dying. Drying out turning brown. (Didn't seem to be canker and wasn't borers.) The canes were not that old and were the ones he left for this year after pruning.

The plant is about 4 years old. The new canes are 6'(!) with buds ready to bloom. Beautiful.

So, did the new canes rob the older canes of nutrients? Or?

Thanks,

Allison
