Which rose for climbing into a frangipani tree?

I have a beautiful old frangipani tree outside my kitchen window and it occured to me that maybe I could plant a rose to climb into its lovely open, sprawling branches. I was thinking maybe Mme. Gregoire Staechlin, as it blooms early (and the frangipani get its leaves late), might be a good choice. Or, I could go for something like Awakening, which would provide much more bloom, along with the tree's own flowers. Or, maybe I should just leave well alone, and enjoy the sculptural beauty of the bare tree? (Although I do have 3 others in the garden). The tree is underplanted with big mounds of lavender and cistus.

I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

I would be concerned about the rose's prickles damaging the plumeria.

Plumeria?! I thought Mme. G. Staechlin is thornless...

I'm taking license and guessing what paving does to the left off the picture. What I'm trying to illustrate in the sketch is placing the two cherry laurels, balanced (and centered as a group) in the bed space created by the paving. A plan view that accurately shows the pipe location would be useful. If the irrigation pipe is still exposed as shown in the picture, I'd move it as necessary... rather than plant the most major component of the landscape unbalanced and off center. If the pipe can't be moved then I'd try to fudge things as close to correct as I could get them. Can't see how the pipe lies in plan view, but c. laurels might work out in front of it. (Would need to see plan view to know.) Keep in mind that these plants are trees & will get big, unless you keep them rigorously sheared. If you don't, you'll need to limb them up to keep them from eating up the patio space. If they're limbed up as they grow so canopy is overhead, they could be closer to the walk without being in the way. Unless you plan to let the Lady Banks heap over the top edge of the fence, I can't really see how it's going to fit in that spot. It's a big, huge heaping thing. Think half the size of a car.

Canes do not have to be horizontal; a vase or fountain shape is sufficient. The idea is maximize exposure to sunlight along the length of the cane. Yes, tying the canes with string to the house works. Just leave plenty of room around the cane so the string doesn't rub or dig in--loose loops. Ditto for trees. Most roses need six hours or so of sun, so plant on the south or southwest side of tree (and, obviously under great big shade trees it won't work. Nix to the roadside. Rugosa roses can tolerate the most by way of salt and cold, but your conditions would push even them.

Wow - I looked up honeylocust trees, and in some of the pictures they were huge - 4+ stories tall. How tall is yours? Of course, the answer to your question depends a lot on how big your tree is. If it is big, I might try a vigorous climbing rose, which would climb up into the tree. My climate is so much warmer than yours that I cannot give you a recommendation, but there are climbing roses which have been developed for colder climates. lf the canopy of your tree is way far off the ground, planting a rose under it might work - I would probably start it in a small raised bed, so that it does not have to compete with the tree roots initially. If you have a small tree, a rambler is a good idea, planted to the side of the tree. Here is a pic of 'Apple Blossom' (Dawson, 1890) climbing up our crab apple tree - it is a once blooming rambler which HMF says is hardy to zone 6b. I agree that planting a rose near a small tree, not right under it, is a better idea. Jackie

Well, I have not grown MGS -- but most "thornless" roses do have some prickles here and there.
Plumeria = frangipani. Plumeria is now the "preferred" term for them (no, I have no idea why that is so).

We grow Plumeria here. Though last winter's record-setting freeze killed one, and severely damaged some others.

Plumeria is the genus name. Try one of the common thornless Rosa banksiae cultivars. May have to prune out sections occasionally to keep it from overwhelming the tree.

I did grow Plumeria in Houston and New Orleans and lost them to an unexpected freeze in NOLA while we were up at the farm. I had thought that the woody stems could handle cooler temps, but the woody parts liquified just as badly as did the newer limbs.
Which makes me worry about a rose that might put on growth rapidly and snap those water filled limbs.
How about a climbing mini or a climbing poly like Cl Clotilde Soupert or the cl china CL Rouletti?

You wouldn't want a large congested heavy mass to be sitting on top of the tree anyway, whatever kind is used it will have to be pruned and trained to produce an attractive effect.

Not sure if my zone 10 is the same as your zone 10, but if it is, then freezes killing the frangipani won't be a problem for you. Unfortunatley growing once-blooming roses (such Mme. Gregoire Staechlin) will be. Once-blooming roses need more cold weather than my (and your?) zone 10 supplies.

I have never grown a frangipani, but the ones I see--and I see a lot of them, always look very bare on the bottom. In south Florida, they only grow to about 15'--almost the size of a large shrub. Most people plant small plants around the base. I think that would be your best landscaping solution. However, if one wanted a climbing rose than using a small climber or a bush that can be trained as a climber would be a better bet than using a large climber that might overwhelm your tree.

BTW, How large is your frangipani?

Frangipani are very popular here in Australia. You did not say what colour the blooms are. I have seen a Phyllis Bide growing on a pink frangipani and it looked lovely.

*** Actually, we lost two of them last winter -- one of them quite large, and one fairly newly-rooted.
We're in Sunset Zone 24 -- almost completely under ocean influence.
Many of Plumeria in our garden, though not killed, were severely damaged.
As Ann says, they can almost liquefy.
If I were to pair a Plumeria with a Rose, I'd stick to something like a China, which has similar climactic requirements.
As for being "bare on the bottom," yes. They ARE!
It's a different sort of plant texture entirely.
Also, they lose all of their leaves in the winter -- making it clear why they are sometimes called "Dead Men's Fingers."

I'm not worried about freezes killing the frangipani - we don't ever get frost, or anything even approaching cold weather! The tree is medium-sized - about 3 meters high and about 4 meters wide - I have both bigger and smaller frangipanis in the garden. It is white.

Is the consensus that NO once-bloomer will flower for me in zone 10? Old Blush? Odorata? MGS? I saw Pompon de Paris on Peter Beales' website - it looks interesting (not quite the colour I am after though). PB doesn't have Clothilde Soupert. Is there a close equivalent? Narrow Water?

I don't want anything too overwhelming - just pale-pink, scented and gorgeous. Need not bloom for ever. I wouold go for quality over quantity.

Narrow Water would be a wonderful rose to grow next to an open window and for the color and fragrance a better choice than CL Old Blush.

*** NORTHERN EUROPEAN ONCE-BLOOMERS will not flourish long-term for you, but you may get them to bloom for a few years, at a reduced level.
Cl. Old Blush bloomed heavily in the spring here, and scattered bloom later. At its best, it was spectacular.
The Banksiaes -- once-blooming for most people -- are for the most part continuous-blooming for us -- as is Fortuniana.
But all of these are MASSIVE plants, which will probably bury your frangipani.
