I live in southwest suburbs of Chicago. I have 2 magnificent clump

> River Birch trees that I planted on the west side of my home ~18 years

> agoÂperfect twins that tower over our home providing great shade and a

> nice sitting area. A large rope hammock is strung between the two trees nowÂPOPULAR SPOT!!). There is a slight slope to a ditch between our 1/3

> acre homesite and the neighbors, and both of our back yards slope to a

> pond. Anyway, over the last few years the sod grass under these two

> trees has become increasing sparse and many large River Birch tree

> roots are now very noticeable under the tree and at the ditch line. I

> suspect these mature roots are sucking-up all the water under these

> trees and winning out over the grass.

> We are giving up on "grass"* and WOULD prefer create a small seating

> level area and "set" the stones CO-EXIST. We are talking a 10

> foot BY 10-12 foot area of this stone -- basically _directly

> under the tree _(where grass is thinnest). Too much weight on

> roots? Note: These roots extend well beyond this conceptual flagstone

> patio area & patio area is not anywhere near the "drip line".
