Mature River Birch Trees by house
Comments (2)It's helpful that you want to use sand, as it is quick draining and full of air spaces. If you go ahead with this, try to use course "builders sand" as it has the most of the attributes mentioned above. Suffocation of the roots is the concern, as they need oxygen to survive. That's one of the reasons why filling in over tree roots with heavier soils can be so detrimental. Using very course sand, I think you'll be okay. +oM...See MoreHAVE: 7 small RiverBirch seedling in 5 gallon pot
Comments (0)Got these seedlings from the Arbor Day Society a couple of year's ago and just threw them into a pot in the ground. The tallest is now about 3 feet. I've dug up the pot, but it has to go! River Birch doesn't grow well in my soil....free to good home. They're small, but a great deal for a loving home! Comments (6)Frankly, I would be worried about any tree planted 4 feet from a house. If the roots don't get the foundation, the limbs will get the roof! According to Cox and Leslie in Texas Trees: A Friendly Guide, the river birch is ornamental, good for erosion control, provides abundant tiny seeds appreciated by wildlife (do you have gutters, and do you have squirrels?) but on the downside is relatively short lived. Please consider moving the trees farther from your house. The ones you describe seem to be of a size and age that can be transplanted....See MoreRetaining wall around river birch
Comments (0)I purchased a young river birch over the weekend (not yet delivered) with the intent of planting it within a raised area behind a retaining wall (not yet built) less than 24" above normal grade. The retaining wall is simply to provide level ground to the adjacent area (area to left in pic). All of this would be placed on the corner of my home extending roughly 12-13' from the corner measured diagonally. My first question is whether or not the retaining wall around the birch is a bad idea. Would the roots destroy the wall? Or is 2' shallow enough for the roots to develop underneath. The next question would be how large of a wall should I build around it. My initial layout looked good at roughly a 6' radius centered on the tree location. But my worries of crowding it set in quickly. My home is fairly new build so I do have the flexibility of changing planting plans or layouts Any feedback would be much appreciated!...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
