Comments (13)Clump birch often lean. (Botann, this could be one tree that grows a couple of side trees, very common for some Birch, even in the woods where they grow naturally.) I can post a photo of mine and you will see the lean is pronounced on 2 of the 3. So far as the limberness of the tree, I think botann nailed it, too much fert when it was grown. This not only makes it suceptible to ice, but wait until a thunderstorm with cross-winds come through. You know all those nice long branches at the top? You will see some of them handing down alongside the trunk, broken but not down. Since River Birch lose their leaves pretty early, snow is rarely a problem. However, rain on the leaves adds weight, and the flimsy branches can break when the wind blows. Birch are fairly brittle trees. Where in PA are you?...See MoreRiver Birch trimmed-leaves fallin off

Comments (10)thanks for all the nice comments :) I cant tell u right now what the diameter is, you'll have to w8 for the weekend before i can tell you that :) The tree took a bit of damage last year (09), my dad had forgotten about it, and i wasnt brought out from its dark dry winter spot before late may, so it lost a few leafs. As you can see the other jade in the back ground took it pretty hard too, it used to have a big thick crown, but last year (09) it lost all its leafs + a big branch that fell off. He made about 20-25 new plants out of the branch and gave them to the local store owner, and she gave them away to the locals. both jades is about the same age and has both served as mother plants in a greenhouse. the plants was taken inside in the middle of November, this time they got to be inside the house and not just a cold dark basement as usual :) heres my own little jade that i broke of a bush in Portugal last year in june. i hope that it will some day look my dads :) im not really sure how im gonna prune it, any suggestions? i was thinking of cutting it down so that it only has the 3 bottom branches left....See MoreCan i trim a lot of small limbs off newly planted river birch
Comments (3)Only prune dead, broken or damaged branches on a newly planted tree. That new tree needs every leaf it can muster to photosynthesize to make food for it's roots. And making roots will be the main project that tree will be doing for this season and beginning of the next. You'll get more robust growth next season by doing that. Then, after the tree is established in a couple of season or so, you can begin pruning. Even then you should only remove 25% of the total crown each season....See MoreDavid Barr
