I ordered two Austins to be sent to my father in Pennsylvania for Father's Day.

If anyone is counting, technically, I am only getting two as I fried Madame Joseph Schwarz and the dog squashed Gruss an Auchun. Also getting Little Butterfly & 'Mableton Rouletii' which is a mini that looks like Old Blush. (Make that one & a half since the second is mini ;-)

To those of you who ordered, or plan to: Are those roses ones that you've longed for, or did you scroll thru the list & select random, interesting-sounding varieties because there was a sale? I'm just curious to know how others happen to acquire roses for their gardens . . .

For myself, two I wanted to replace so the price was right. The other two I got to support Vintage since shipping is by 4's.

Same for supporting EuroDesert, I don't NEED to order any but will do so anyway because Cliff still has varieties that I would like to have.

Times are tough for what I call our rosy "mom & pop's". We kid around a lot about 'how we count roses' but supporting our M & P's is now a serious matter as is evident by how many have closed in the last year or so. If you have extra birthday, tax or other discretionary funds and have room for some more roses yourself, or as a gift, or as a charitable donation requesting the recipient buy roses from an M & P, it would be wonderful if you could do so.

I totally agree, and that's why I sat yesterday morning and poured over the sale offerings to see which ones I would love to have in my garden.

Scarlet Sensation and King Boreas are new additions to my Brownell collection. Captain Thomas is to replace the one I killed two years ago. The others are rare and unusual and only available at Vintage (according to HMF).

The hardest part about ordering (after paring down the sale list) is deciding which roses make the main order and which ones to add as alternates. My alternate choices were Arpeggio, Emile Charles, Justitzrat de Hessert, and Shropshire Lass.

I'll look at Eurodesert later this week.

I pored over both rose lists extensively because I so much want to support these vendors but, except for News, which I had before and loved, couldn't really find anything I simply had to have. I've come to the point where my available space is gone and I would have to discard roses in order to buy new ones. I just counted my discarded roses and discovered to my horror that the number is now 57, which is pretty dire since I only grow 88 roses now. My only comfort is that the sale of these roses helped several rose vendors.

I love Frau Karl Drushki and the rose it was crossed with looks to be a beauty so it's a gamble what the brilliant Guillot family produced by their crossing it with JL Mock.

I was tempted by Justitzrat too. I looked through the sale offerings and checked them out on hmf. I was tempted by Purple Tiger but it sounds runty.
I didn't get all sale roses.

Purple Tiger is runty. I almost never shovel-prune roses, and I gladly dug this one out last year. Lovely flowers on a hideous plant.

Gruss an Coburg is beautiful.

Makes me wonder if I should have considered Louis Bourgoin? No, not second guessing my selections ... too much, that is.
