Two free rose sale at Vintage

I haven't seen this on their website yet, but Vintage has emailed out a sale for April that with every 8 roses you buy you get two of them free, rather than just one free (or $2 off each rose if you buy 4). You have to supply as many alternate choices as you order, but I find their bands terrific (and prices reasonable) and I think this offer is a good deal.

More than this, we've all been concerned in the rose world about seeing if we can help keep Vintage in business. I've seen posts here assuming that Vintage has pulled through their intended closing, but that doesn't yet seem to be the case. The latest email was literally an "SOS" from Gregg to help save Vintage by keeping up with orders yet this spring.

I realize that we all buy roses from many places and I've been buying from my usual sources, as well as several (okay, 5) previous orders from Vintage for this year. Still, I looked at this sale as an opportunity to support a rose vendor I value and do a little rose enabling among my neighbors at the same time. I showed the "two rose free" sale to two of my neighbors who are very interested but not all that experienced with roses, and offered choices for each of them to pick two free.

Yes, I know I only GET two free ones total, but as long as they don't talk to each other about this I get to be a rose enabler and help out Vintage at the same time. For the newest neighbor, she just wanted "typical rose-looking roses" that are totally easy care, so I ordered her Royal William and Gene Boerner, and the other one wanted wanted typical HTs in white and "something unusual", so I got her Flaming Peace and a choice of Burnaby or White Prince.

And even though most of what I really want for myself isn't available from Vintage at the time, it wasn't very hard to fill out the rest of the order for myself. I figured that if I ever want the rest of those Custom Order roses to resurface as Vintage offerings, I can help do something to help that now.

Just my two cents, but we're all looking for a good deal and this one is also helping keep a breadth of rose offerings available. Check back in with the forum if you want advice among these offerings, and we'll all be happy rose enablers!

Thanks - I'm looking to buy some, not that many, but to help a small business I'll look into them and buy if I like what I hear.

You know, that SOS email from Greg Lowery really got to me. I don't need any new roses; I'm out of time and energy to care for those I've already got...but I thought about my son musing over a "fence row" of large roses and I thought, aha! I can place an order as a gift. As the email said, I really will feel good when (Vintage) "can announce that we are able to continue, you'll be proud that you helped make it happen!"
Thanks for beginning this thread, Cynthia. I was thinking about doing it and you beat me to it. Hope lots of others think about ordering if they can. To lose a nursery like Vintage is still so unthinkable.

I will be most happy to share anything I have once I get them growing well. I don't have growing cuttings down pat yet - that is a skill I hope to become reasonably proficient at. I am babying along some Vintage bands like Earl of Eldon and one day hope to share these treasures. Greg Grant, a first class Texas plantsman, is going to come visit when I get my rose bands a bit more mature - going to give him cuttings to grow - he works at SFA University in the horticulture dept. and has access to all the finest mist systems so should be able to get a bunch to grow. I am in process of getting electricity put in my greenhouse - electrician should be finished tomorrow - so hope to set up some sort of misting/light system. Maybe one day there can be a thread on exchanges when these plants get older and cuttings can be passed around. I am amazed - and pleased for Gregg - that ALL the roses got sold! Will be interesting to see what everyone gets. Judith

I'm wondering though whether the roses that have been ordered have been taken off the lists. There were only two Zaluds and it's difficult for me to believe one is left, after I ordered the other one, considering that when I ordered one before that was listed I was told it was no longer available. I still haven't heard from Vintage and that worries me. Time for an e-mail, I think. Ingrid

I am not very computer savy......but I am wondering if, rather than saving page by page, I think the catalog has the same information in it, and perhaps if the photos that are not in the catalog could be saved in an album, it might be a space saving way to save the information. I do have the catalog and prize it highly. But if the photos could be saved, that would be a huge help to compare them with the catalog information. I heard from Gregg that I got "several" on my gallon sale list and am waiting to hear. I also ordered several more from the website - hope I get them also. I guess the gallon sale will be the actual last order for me from Vintage. I think back of all the wonderful roses that were available some years ago. I ordered lots but now I wish I had ordered so many more. I wish some of the other vendors like Rogue Valley, Heirloom, Roses Unlimited, etc. would buy rights to cuttings of these marvelous roses and offer them........the roses have to be pruned anyway, and it would be a way to make a little money from the new enterprise - and get the rare roses back into commerce. How I hate the closing of this respected and unique nursery!!! Judith

Cyber Monday. ie, the Monday after Thanksgiving. They've had it for two years now and had planned to repeat it this year when I last asked. They also had one for Valentine's Day that started a few days before. I can check my notes if you like. There was a 4? rose minimum and delivery when you choose. You can also add more later which is good if it's OoS at that time.

Argh! I've already received 20 new bands, and I have 6 more custom roots on the way - all from Vintage. I don't have any more room!

I'm planning on touring the garden when they open it in April, and I might have to make a few purchases while I'm there. But I've been trying not to be tempted into ordering more, simply because I'm going to have enough trouble tending to all of the ones I have already.
