Thanks for the link, I think you may be correct. Once, I saw the name, Madame Plantier, it sounded very familiar and the pictures are definetely like it.

She keeps blooming, started about 3-4 weeks ago, I even cut her back a bit and with the rain she has grown and bloomed more. The pics of M. Plantier sure look similiar.

OK. But if she is remontant through the year, she is NOT Mme. Plantier. I'd like to see a pix, but I'd be more likely to bet on it being one of the cluster-flowering Noisettes of the broadly-distributed 'Blush Noisette' clan.

She does have thorns. The blooms seem to last several days. I am reconsidering whether this one is Remontant- does that mean that the whole plant blooms for a short time and that is it? or is it when blooms appear on several different branches at different times? Another clue: the blooms do smell good. We are having rain all weekend. I will try to get a picture and then I will TRY to post it, I appreciate the help.

Vernon, typically, a once bloomer blooms all over more or less at one time. Mme. Plantier does bloom for a fairly long period, fairly late in the spring.
I think you need to wait and see if it goes through a flush, is deadheaded, and sets more buds.

Please forgive me for the redundancy, but I had a thread going on some roses I found around town. Could this be Mme. Plantier? I immediately thought "bride's rose" when I was processing my photos. I haven't observed it long enough to have observed its habits. In one of my shots, it does have small, inocuous looking thorns, also another shot shows a green button, but it was the only bloom like that. It is beautiful, could be more than one bush, large, tumbling over a rubble wall.

No, I don't believe this is Madame Plantier. She has a conspicuous green eye which this rose clearly lacks.

The BUD looks like Mme. Plantier, and the foliage looks PRECISELY like that of Mme. Plantier. That foliage is really distinctive, too.
But I have never seen MP open up all the way like that. She does indeed have a button eye, and a delicate-but-noticeable green pip.

Here Mme P doesn't ever show stamens, has more petals, often quartered, with consistent green eye. Flower is 2-1/4". Thorns are few and straight. The foliage does look similar, though, and that is certainly a lovely rose.

Here are some more of it. One shows the green eye, don't know why only one like that. Didn't see any sign of quarters. Does Mme. Plantier repeat, I think someone said it is supposed to, and I thought HMF said z3-9? Having trouble getting the pics to embed.

I am told that a happy, mature Mme. Plantier can repeat. Certainly, I have seen MPs in the late fall in old cemeteries with petals clinging -- so I believe it. But while it may have some Fall repeat, it is not truly remontant in the sense of producing multiple flushes of bloom.

I'm not sure what you have there, and I'm not saying it CAN'T be M.P. -- However, I am somewhat doubtful, based upon the bloom. I'll see if I can't find some other images here that might be helpful.

I'm still highly dubious that this is in fact Madame Plantier. First, the prickles don't look right to me, either. This plant has too many while mine has comparatively few. Notice the somewhat bristly appearance on the new cane in one of the photos.

Mine has also never repeated in the seven or so years I've had it, though that may be due to the specifics of my growing conditions. But what she doesn't do is drop her petals cleanly after her bloom is finished. They hang on, turn greyish, and look like used Kleenex. This might explain the petals you saw in the cemetery in the Fall.

I'm guessing the person that did the talk from South Carolina was Ruth Knopf. She quite often talks about Noisette roses, so I'd guess it's one of those.

Thanks, jerijen. Yours is gorgeous and quite different. The ones I found aren't that then, and this IS Iowa, but the Germans settled here, and may have brought in some old named roses. I will stop by and see if the property owner knows anything about its history, highly doubtful. I sure like it anyway.

It would be interesting to find out just how people acquired these old roses in my parts. I know they must have shared cuttings, but don't know anything about when nurseries started up or if they could order by mail back then.

You know, it would be wonderful if you could find out some of that. One pathway to discovery might be to contact the local Historical society. Every area has one -- the folks are dedicated (and don't get enough credit) and I bet they'd find the question interesting. SO WOULD WE!

The longer we delay, the more information is lost, and you just never know what sorts of treasures are hidden in plain view.

I'll find out what our HS is and ask if they can dig up some info for me. Maybe I'll call one or several of the local papers, show them some photos of ones I've found, and see if I can get them to do something on it, if I can remain in the background, don't like publicity. That could throw me off track though.

Also, something may have been written up in the past that I missed as I've just gotten hooked on these roses since 2003 when I found the Harison. Actually it started when I was a little girl and across the street was an arbor with something like a Fr. Hugo on it. From there, I found one growing as a hedge when my children were small back in the 70's and asked the people if I could have some seeds, was clueless about propagation in those days and no one to share my interest, so it has been dormant until lately.

I'm waaaaay behind in my knowledge about these old roses, can't stop me from looking for them and trying to propagate them, photographing them, and just plain enjoying them.

If I didn't have anything else to do, I should dig in and start researching myself starting at the library. They are extremely helpful there. Maybe in the winter I will do that.

You are right, Ron. It was Ruth Knopf. I found her address on White Pages and I am sending her note requesting her help. As I said before I will post when I found out the name of this rose. I enjoy reading the answers and conversation that the post has brought about.

I wonder if some roses give fall repeat in California because of the three-month drought in summer. Could long semi-dormancy take the place of winter for some roses?

It's possible I guess. Or perhaps it is simply a factor of the length of the growing period?

Michael, I'm not sure what causes the repeat on so many roses here, I tend to think it has something to do with the long periods of spring-like weather, since some that repeat on the coast up here (like Climbing Cecile Brunner, all the Banksia roses, etc.) never repeat inland where summers are hot, but the growing season is just as long.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in to help me. The name Ruth Knopf was familiar to me and when brought up I realized it was a rose from her. I was able to get Ruth's Address and wrote to her. Here is her reply: "From your description of the rose you have from me I believe it is the white one that I received from Jose Marrero in Puerto Rico. He collected old roses there for many years and wrote about them. He said this one is called there "Brides' Rose". It is a tradition there for the bride to use them in their wedding bouquet. I still have the plant he sent me and it has produced many to share with others. It is much like the hybrid musk rose "Prosperity" and some think it may be that. I will locate my original information from Jose and see if he said anything else about it and I will let you know if I find out anything more."

She is such a nice lady. I thought since so many helped I would post her answer to me.
