Ideas to make a tree look nicer?!

We have a tree at the end of our garden that is pretty on the top, but the trunk is quite long, bent in a wierd way, and looks very bare!

I wondered if anyone had any ideas of how we could make it look nicer? We've thought of running ivy or similar up it, or wrapping outdoor lights around it, but does anyone have any different ideas- neither of those really appeal!

Yep - picture attached

Not the best I'm afraid as it's missing the bottom (which is the worst bit), but hopefully you can get the idea!

Sounds like a great idea... I had no idea what "newel" posts were named but that is exactly what I was looking for and did not realize they came fabricated. Purplish tones like your wall can be very sophisticated when used with neutral colors. If you tape a piece of white paper on on the wall and then take a photo of it in daylight and night, we'll have a better idea of the true color. Different light bulbs and different computer screens can cause colors to look off, and the white paper gives us a baseline. If you don't want to spend a lot on decor, second hand stores are a great resource. People get tired of stuff, or move, and their things no longer look right. I'm also a fan of spray paint. If a picture frame, or maybe a large bowl/platter for your coffee table, is the right size and shape, it can be any color you want including metallic. It could be something from a resale store or something that you already have in another room. The new spray paints will stick to just about anything. Post some pictures as you go along and I'm sure we'll have some more suggestions. Do you have anything in other rooms that you think might work here?

Thanks so much, y'all! Many of the things mentioned are things on the eventually "to do" list but it's nice to have my thoughts validated. Sadly, I don't think popcorn removal is a valid option for us, at l least not at this time, and I haven't convinced myself it's truly worth it. I wish we could do that throughout the whole house! I am working on cleaning up the countertops cuz they look horrible and everything is so hard to to keep clean. The kitchen is pretty much my husband's domain so getting rid of anything is a long, slow process! I tried not to show too much of it in the pictures! LOL I love the idea of hidden hinges. I will look into that. I'd love to also replace the top moulding, but I'll definitely have to look into the cost. yeah it looks cheap... like I said, 70's mobile home, LOL! Any recommendations on colors if I choose to paint? and what color hardware if I decide to change it? I'm leaning towards something colorful and bright. There is only one tiny window there, and the yard is all shaded, so not much light at all comes in.

Juju Sin, I am not professional. What I post are just personal opinions. The Victorian door and shutters are out of place and I would remove them. The house itself has no ornamentation. I think a simple landscape would suit the house. If the foundation shrubs are healthy then keep them. I would remove the round shrubs in the bed along the path. I'd also consider moving the palm type plant near the door to the driveway area. The bed to the right of the path adds nothing beneficial and I would extend the lawn to the path. I'd remove the right side column. The other column contains a mail box so I would keep it. It looks like you do not have a tree. Would they like a tree?

Yep, ivy would certainly help hide the trunk. Lights would probably make it worse, by accentuating the poor shape.

The tree was pollarded (the branches cut off) a few years ago; I'd also think about getting all the post-pollarding sprouts thinned out to give the crown a more balanced appearance.

Probably a Common Lime Tilia ÃÂ europaea.

Thanks for the info... will have a think about balancing.

Ivy is the obvious choice, but would prefer something a bit different... anyone got any unusual ideas!?

Ivy is actually as good as you'll get - being native, it is very good for wildlife, while it is also evergreen, and self-clinging.

Once the ivy is established, you could perhaps add a honeysuckle as well to climb up the ivy, to add some flower interest, but it wouldn't climb the trunk well on its own.

subject to a pic of the whole.. i would start saving money for total removal..

really now.. you know there is nothing to 'save' this tree... and unless you pollard/top it again.. it is going to start dropping many of those over-crowded branches up top ... they just arent supposed to clump like that ... and will eventually fail ...

and if the top looks like that.. i am wondering what you are hiding at the bottom.. is this thing a threat to you.. your home.. or the neighbors?????

Well, it looks a lot nicer when there are leaves on it! And that's an old pic - didnt have chance to take a new one... not really hiding anything!

Not taking it down as it provides privacy too...

Think we're going to go the Ivy route...
