of Butterscotch, the climber (JACtan).

The normal blooms of Butterscotch are a rich tan that look just like butterscotch pudding. Last year, to satisify some who wanted it, I started a number of cuttings from a cane that had bloomed out.

All the blooms last year were normal. This year I noticed three of the overwintered cuttings had unusally rich pink colored blooms shaped differently than normal. Checking the bush, two of the canes have similar blooms while the rest of the bush have normal ones. The pinkish colored blooms are really striking although they do not bloom double. The blooms are almost flat but slightly cupped. I missed taking pictures while I waited for the rest of my cuttings to bloom and tried to identify the rose. I have been known to get cutting tags mixed up. All are spent but some buds that show normal and the pink color are close to opening on the mother plant. As soon as they open, I'll take pictures and post them for your comments.

I've never had a sport before so this is something new for me. If it proves to be stable, I'll name and register it.

That's very exciting. I've had sports show on a couple of my rose bushes, but it never lasts. The strangest was pure white blooms on my very purple Ebb Tide. What was even stranger was that my purple clematis had some white and some mixed white/purple blooms about the same time. Must have been weather related.

Oh Karl! I have 2 old Butterscotch Climbers that I had to move during mid winter. I have been watching over them. Looks like they are going to come out of it okay. Workmen broke a couple of the roots and I found them laying out in the grass. (don't know for how long) I grabbed them up and put them in big containers to soak for a couple of days, and plunked them unceremoniasly into ground. I worried about one of them, but it is going to make it okay. I have ordered some rooter pots and they should be here next week. I will try them, when I am sure the climbers are healthy. Hooray on still having yours.

Starting that far in advance most things will have to be transplanted to larger containers. If you check over on the Growing from Seed forum you'll find many very helpful discussions as well as good FAQs on growing things from seed - how-to do it and what all is required once they sprout. Dave PS: Peat pellets don't work for everything and carrots would definitely be one of them IMO. Ken, I hope you won't panic when you see yellow leaves or even a few black spots. It may not be the disease but merely the shedding of old leaves. My Clotilde Souperts just had a huge flush, and now they are covered with dried up blooms and yellow leaves, but I'm not worried this time. I learned that this is how she cycles. In a week or two she'll be green and leafed out again and popping with flower buds. Teas do that, too, but not quite as dramatically. May I suggest visiting my HMF plant list (same user name)? It will give you an idea of safe plants in our area. I had NN and would still have it except it was looking like it wanted to be too big. Some on your list may need spraying, but spraying may not be your answer. Better to grow roses that are happy here without spraying. But your grand experiment is well worth a shot! I would just hold off on spraying until you see what's what. Young roses that don't have extensive root systems yet and get stressed due to heat and lack of water (from not having big root systems yet) often look unhealthy because they don't have the defenses yet to fend off the attackers. Give them plenty of water (daily for at least a month) and let them grow and get some equilibrium. You will almost certainly be replacing some on your list, but that's life. Come next July, August & September you will not want to be out in the garden spraying fungicide, but the right roses will be loving that heat provided you give them consistent water. Water is life to Florida roses, and more importantly, it is leaves and health. It's amazing what conditions a rose can tolerate, and equally amazing what an improvement will come from a little more of everything - water, food, compost. It won't be long, and you'll have you're sea-legs in your garden. Sad about Sdlm dying. You might try putting her in a pot and babying her until she recuperates, but if she's really gone, definitely replace her. A better rose for a Florida garden you will not find -- but she'll get some yellow leaves, too, after a flush. Sherry

It could be a sport or the grower stuck a wrong cutting. Sports can occur for various reasons. It would not come from a seed but usually mutate from the original plant. Sports can come from a virus (see the details behind begonia 'Charm'). Anyway if you find it interesting enough, then you may propagate a bunch to carry over and start a new line (if it is truly new). You should be able to take stem cuttings and start some new plants. Not sure if you can propagate semperflorens (wax) from leaves. Seed in this case may not come true as well. If it is a beauty, then I would contact some of the big growers so they can see if they think there is any commercial value, or go it alone. Good luck and hope to see it in stores in a few years. Oh!! They're ALL gorgeous!!! I'm wondering what you think of Broceliande? I have it new this year as a bare root. No blooms yet. What do you think of the rose in general, and the fragrance in specific? Can't wait for mine to bloom and look like that? I've seen some Broceliande pictures with yellow in them and some without yellow. I'm wondering if that is temperature related?? Carol

Actually I lost the original one purchased the first year it was introduced. Chuck of chuck&billie, who post here, knew I was trying to replace it, found and sent me one a few years ago. Until now it sort of lanquished in it's spot but really has taken off this year. Finding enough cane for cuttings has been a chore until now.

Way to go Karl. I hope it is stable too and worth growing on. Then you will have the fun of naming it. Something with "kitty" in the name perhaps?-LOL...Looking forward to photos.

It sounds as if it's stable through the first generation/reproduction. Only two more to go (and you do have the knack for rooting it.)

If your Butterscotch is a grafted rose, did you check to see whether the different colored blooms are growing from below the bud union? If the rose is winter killed, sometimes the original parent plant(below the bud union) will put out flowers of a different color. Most grafted roses are grafted onto Doctor Huey understock. What color is Doctor Huey? Pink? This happened to me and I dug up the bush. Margaret
