Plaisanterie (HM, Lens 1996)

Hi all,

I was fortunate to win a silent auction for Plaisanterie (HM, Lens 1996) at last Sunday's wonderful Celebration of Old Roses in El Cerrito that Jeri and Clay had.

I know there was a thread about this rose last year but am wondering if there's any more people growing it and their experience as to size, disease resistance, shade tolerance etc.

My garden is a challenge with fog and shade but Trier, which I believe is a parent of Plaisanterie does beautifully for me.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm not in your zone, but I do grow it in full blazing unrelenting sun. So far I'm loving everything about it.

Lucky you, Diane. Plaisanterie can grow to considerable size. If left alone and unpruned, it forms a large arching, then mounding shrub. Mine is easily 7.5 feet tall and 10 or 12 feet wide. I keep it large because it's a screening shrub for my garage. I have a second plant that's quite a bit smaller, maybe 6 feet wide and 5 feet high. It's younger and not a close to the hose bib, so it doesn't get any incidental water. I'm pretty sure you could train it as an espalier, although it wouldn't be fun.

It puts on a big flush in the spring and has scattered bloom after that. Maybe if it were deadheaded it would repeat more...but there's no way to deadhead mine without a cherry picker. It will be just about evergreen in your climate, as it is in mine. If you live in a fairly civilized garden (without deer, rabbits, football players and dogs), you should be able to plant out that one gallon now. Plaisanterie won't do much in a pot, and it wants to get up and grow. I can't really fertilize my plant effectively at this size, not that I want it any bigger, but every couple of winters I take a half cup of granular nitrogen fertilizer and sort of toss it in the air over Plaisanterie and call it a day. The soils here are very acid. Plaisanterie is not fussy about that and probably actually prefers it.

About pruning and keeping it smaller....I have no idea. I did notice dead wood underneath at the base, which is completely hidden by foliage. If I cared about things I can't see, I could remove it. I view it as armor from the assorted pestiferous Rodentia that live out in the country, so I leave it.

Hi Robert: I love that peaceful picture that you posted, it does look like an oasis as Seil described. I have the herb rosemary here but my cooking is so bad that I need some tips on how to use rosemary in cooking (I tried on steamed salmon and it wasn't that good). I'm temped by Louis Odier, it's hardy to zone 5a - I'm too lazy to peg and wonder if Krista grows it as a free standing shrub, or does it need pegging on a trellis or wall in zone 5a? Hi lizalily in PNW: I took own-root Firefighter from my Rose Unlimited since I want to get it grafted instead. Hot Cocoa is always in bloom at the rose park nearby, zone 5a. This winter is mild, and I'm hoping for another mild winter. The last 2 winters were brutal, my Knock-outs died back to the crown. Does anyone know if winter 2012-2013 will be mild like this year? If so, then I'll add more Meilland roses like Pink Peace, Peter Mayle along with Melody Perfume and Firefigher (I believe these 2 are low-in-thorns?) Thank you.

Okay, this isn't what you asked, but let me just throw in that I do grow the Alexandra Rose. She is on her own roots and at the merge of two walkways. Even though she is lax and outreaching in her habits, and although she does send up suckers, I still haven't found it necessary to move her elsewhere. I just keep shortening her even during the season and she keeps right on blooming. I think she is lovely. If I had had my wits about me (ha!!) I probably would have put her back farther, but that is the story of my life in roses....

Kat, thanks for the link to Meg. She is very pretty. I really want something with the continual bloom of Mutabilis, however. I grew Jacob's Coat as one of my first bodybags. It was very floriferous but too modern, as you all have pointed out, for my color scheme. I have a pigwire arch about two feet wide on the sides, 8 ft tall with a 3 ft "roof". I have Parade growing on one side. It is not graceful nor formal. My garden is pretty much cottage-rustic-get by and make do-chic (if that can be considered chic....LOL). I was looking at Mutabilis (near the Parade arch) and thinking how complimentary the colors were with Parade. I'm getting more of the chamois, buff now that the temps have cooled. I don't mind the twiggy on the bush but as a climber it might look odd with the lushly foliated Parade...would it look lopsided or would it contract nicely? I have two Mutabilis, the one I was looking at is on fortuniana, so it is already 4ish feet high. I just have no idea how to train it as a climber. I've asked a here a couple of times about training but I guess that is a dumb question. LOL. I see lots of roses on HMF which state "may be trained as a climber" but I have no idea how to do that.... I was also thinking of Nur Mahal as she is throwing out long canes but I will need to see her in bloom to determine if the colors will work. Camps, I love the Lens roses. I was trying to find a US seller the other day for a Lens HM and couldn't find one. If Mutabilis will make 8 ft in the UK it will likely do a bit taller here.. Susan

Nik.... I think if you leave it where it is, as a freestanding shrub, you are going to have to support its canes with something, I don't know what... I wouldn't want to grow it that way, if it is FEL, and let's assume it is for now... my plant was grown on a partition fence within my garden, not on a boundary, and it grew to about 10-12 feet width before I moved on... it develops thick strong canes, thorny too, and made a heavy plant... at one time I thought it would bring the fence down, so I had to reinforce it...think of it as a mini Kiftsgate... and as you can see from my photos earlier, it's growing on a wall in that garden - best place for it... I was disappointed in that I couldn't detect a great scent either, as I had been led to believe it possessed... ...looking at your rose again, its habit does remind me of it too, canes flying out everywhere, rambler type... they need tying in... ..best of luck with your 6 foot cane approach, but rather you than me...

I have Plaisanterie (Trier x Mutabilis) growing in my garden. It was a grafted rose from Hortico and grows as a tallish slender shrub probably 6-7 ft tall in a graceful fountain shape. I provided support for the first few years as the canes were rather willowy. It doesn't resemble the thick bushy shrubs I've seen on this forum but either way it is a beautiful rose. It is not unlike Trier in growth habit and is much hardier than Mutabilis which is very susceptible to late frosts. Plaisanterie has smallish leaves with no disease. Highly recommended rose.
