how to find lawn sprinkler pipes

I have one sprinkler head, the first one on the line, that has been completely choked and destroyed by birch roots. Basically I can't get near it without probably killing the tree. When I use this line, the other heads work but I have an enormous leak at this first head. I hope to find the pipe upstream of this by digging between the valve box and the head, and connect that to the pipe after the first sprinkler head. In that manner, I hope to be able to use this line by removing the destroyed head.

I'm trenching where I think the pipe should be going but no luck. I think I am deep enough. How would the builder have laid the supply pipe? Could it be he dug a trench fairly far from the head and then put on a branch to it? Or does the main pipe usually go within a foot or so of the head? Maybe I am digging no where near the pipe.
