Appalachian spring dogwood companioned with?

Has any one purchased an Applachian Spring dogwood, and if so, do you have pictures? I have room for two small trees in the backyard. I am considering this dogwood, with a redbud, perhaps forest pansy, or a stewartia. Desparately in neeed of opinions or pictures, if you have them.

I love dogwoods Sandy. I also have some redbuds and came close to ordering a stewartia this spring.

What state are you in?

Is your planting site high and dry or low and wet?

We have similar preferences in trees. I also nearly purchased a stewartia. Last year I was thinking of a service berry. I have been struggling with this for years, and finally have the area cleared which is dry and high and in front of some existing tall pines. There is an area that widens out like wide U where I would place the forest pansy, and some space behind it to the right for another tree. We had 2 cherries there when we moved in but they were takig over the yard, and were also impacted by the acidity of the soil from the pines. I know Dogwood can coexist with the pine roots, I believe Redbuds can also. I could actually do 3 trees if I planted a smaller tree to the left of the middle one.

I so need this space filled and looking wooded again.

Thank you to all of you for this wonderful discussion. I think I will go with Cornus 'Venus' since it sounds like it is better suited to my area. Jimbobfeeny, I already have two mature Amelanchier and love them. They have very nice structure, good fall color, pretty white flowers in early spring and lots of delicious fruit. We often stand by the trees picking the ripe berries and stuffing our faces, lol! Gardenapprentice, no need to worry. Bradford pears are probably at the very bottom of my list of suitable trees. Every specimen I have ever seen looks so dull. And the scent of the flowers is horrid! Whaas, thank you for the suggestion of the Maackia. I had never known much about this tree until looking it up after you mentioned it. It is beautiful but not quite what I had in mind for this area.

Actually, spraying with a contact pesticide like Diazinon or Dursban (even if you could get them) won't help with borers at all. You'll need to let us see some close-up shots of the problem.

I decided to take emergency measures. I bought some miracle-gro for acid loving plants, and some Espoma Soil Acidifier. I filled a large pot with soil and the soil acidifier. I transplanted the tree into this pot, moved it to light shade, and watered it with the acid-loving miracle grow. As I was doing this, I noticed a bright pink hydrangea in my neighbor's yard. Darn, I didn't realize dogwoods were that fussy about pH.

This question really has nothing to do with Landscape Design......you will likely get much better info from reposting on the Trees forum............ Having said that, dogwood anthracnose is a serious issue with most cultivars of Cornus florida and can lead to the eventual demise of the tree. Of the three choices listed I would stick with Appalachian Spring, as it was developed with strong anthracnose resistance. According to reports, this cultivar is alledgedly 100% resistant. Korean dogwoods - Cornus kousa - have strong anthracnose resistance as well but are not necessarily immune and bloom somewat later in the season. And tend to have a very large flower bracts and in a higher ration of flowers to leaves :-)) They are also often in the parentage of hybrid flowering dogwoods that tend to be highly anthracnose resistant and any of those would be a good choice also - look for Cornus Aurora, Venus, Constellation, or Saturn.

I put in four Appalachian Spring dogwoods last fall. I will take a picture tomorrow. They are around the patio. Two are popping already and two will probably show by this weekend if our warm weather sticks around. I also put in a serviceberry (which the dogs immediately uprooted-seriously-it was a matter of an hour or so) and I replanted. Nothing happening with it yet.

Dogwoods look lovely with redbuds. We also have lots of oak trees. Dogwoods are naturally understory trees and are all over the place in the woods around here in northern VA, so they will coexist with most larger trees. Mine are fine in a variety of spots-some drier, some wetter. We have acidic soil-Virginia clay. I have azaleas, ferns, hostas, etc. around them-well, except that the galloping gardeners have killed the azaleas and I am holding my breath on whether the ferns and hosta will reappear. Oh well.

We probably live close by; I wish I had a larger backyard to play with; and I am not ready to compromise the area to the far right where I have my veggie garden.

I might be able to squeeze in 1 more tree about 13 feet beyond the this site for the Forest pansy red bud, (or the dogwood,) The difficult thing is to bring it down to JUST 1 tree at this point.
