Hurricane Sandy, damaged lawn tractors

I can't find the tractor forum here on garden web, is it gone?

I'll post my question there:

Among my losses from Hurricane Sandy are yard/garden tractors. I am considering offering one or both tractors "free" to anyone who is able to pick up the tractors - maybe a used tractor business, there are a couple of them within 20 miles of me.

2005 DYT 4000 Hydro with 42" deck.

This machine has low hours, I estimate less than 400, and has seen the head gasket replaced this spring (18.5 HP Intek 1 cylinder with poor head bolt design). The deluxe seat and steering wheel have minor damage, the mower deck appears to be undamaged as does the hood and front end (steering/tires). The major damage appears to be a broken hydro (transaxle) as the right rear wheel is at an angle that suggest the axle may have broken. The hydro speed/direction lever is also bent.

My view is the DYT 4000 repair cost, even done DYI, will cost more than can be justified. But, it has many useable parts.

Seeking views on how to go about getting the tractor removed from my property without my paying for beyond the value of the useable parts.

1993 GT6000 - minor damage, just the gas filler tube, it appears. Had it been parked about 4" further forward it would have been completely missed by the falling Pine trees (multiple trunk large White Pine). The gas tank replacement looks to be a minor repair job, and not expensive if I can find a used tank...this is almost an antique tractor, parts may be scarce - I also wonder if it might be of interest to someone to pick it up for the value of the parts. The hood also has a slight dent, due to be dropping a branch when cutting the tractor out of the mess around it. I may have even caused the gas filler tube damage while hitting the large branches with my chain saw. At least I haven't hurt myself, yet.

Good news on the GT gas tank issue, Sears parts has a new tank for $59 plus S&H, quite affordable. I may repair that machine.

I am sure that you were not the only one who had tractor damage. Could you contact your insurance company, and find where they dispose of the dead tractors. The odds are that there is a tractor out there with a totaled front end and a perfect transaxle, that can be picked up for almost nothing.

Of course this depends on what your insurance company will pay for the damaged tractor. My home owner insurance covers yard tools, yard equipment, and small sheds.

I think I have read all the rest of your posts. Too bad this forum has slowed down so much. I'll try to summarize some points for you. Grubs are done feeding. Killing them now is a waste of poison, time, and money. Spreading Sevin willy-nilly is part of the problem with home owners and possibly one reason they took it off the market. The nature of the "trails" in your first photo make me think you have a disease that only affected the Kentucky bluegrass in your lawn. What is left is clumps of fescue. At least you have something left. The reason for mixing fescue and KBG is just in case of something like this. One problem is your are watering waaaaaay to frequently. In the hottest heat of summer I water once a week. Of course sometimes I water for 7 hours to get a full inch of water, but usually, even in San Antonio, I water 3/8 inch, once a week. With my watering system it takes 3 hours to water 3/8 inch, so take your water pressure into consideration. Use cat food cans to measure how long it takes to get an inch of water. I can almost promise that you will be surprised. Deep infrequent watering for turf has been the rule forever. I'm nearly convinced it is the inexperienced or unknowledgeable sprinkler installers who set up demonstrations who are responsible for the trend in brief frequent watering. Getting to the reason for your weeds, reread the paragraph above. Brief frequent watering is what weed seeds need to germinate. That is exactly what you are doing now. If you can give the surface time to dry out between watering, those weed seeds will not germinate. Of course Mother Nature has Her own ideas about when to water, so keep that in mind when deciding when you water. Can't you stretch a hose out with an oscillator sprinkler and water the grass? My father had an in ground system and I was the repair guy. I hate them. How much area are we talking about? I think if you overseed with Kentucky bluegrass and follow the suggestions about watering, your problems will go away next season.

If the subject wasn't so serious, I guess I would find some of the responses amusing. Trotting out stories about what you and your friends did as kids is totally immaterial to the PROVABLE statistics that get recorded by hospitals who treat injured children every year. So what if you did what you did 60 years ago? Did you ever consider that maybe, just maybe.... you and your friends were lucky? As I kid, I was lucky too. I've cheated death too many times to remember. So....I'm not talking about the "lucky" kids like you, me and your buddies. I'm talking about the unlucky kids who have to go through life with two arms missing or a leg missing. The OP is old enough to figure it out for himself. Everything a person does on a daily basis comes with an element of risk. We wear a seat belt to reduce the risk of injury should we be unlucky enough to be in an accident. We wear bike helmets, hockey helmets and motorcycle helmets to hopefully keep us from death or becoming a vegetable on life support. Accidents are NOT always our fault. To suggest that child injuries happen because of stupid decisions made by stupid adults is the height of arrogance. Talk to anyone who has been in an accident and ask them this question. "At one point, you were doing what you were doing and you felt totally safe and comfortable, yes? So, can you tell me how long it was between feeling safe and comfortable and the moment when you realized that an accident had just taken place?" 99% of the time, they will tell you that is was a split-second. They will tell you that they were doing all of the right things at the time but they never saw what was happening or they never saw it soon enough to prevent what ultimately happened. So if the above makes me a PC hot-air soap boxer but I manage to prevent the OP's grandchild from being hurt, then I have no problem with that title. Guys like you come on these forums and essentially preach unsafe practices to novices and then try to use terms such as "American culture" to justify it. But if the unthinkable happens to one of the OP's grandchildren, will you be around to help pick up the pieces? Hell no! You'll still be on forums like this one spouting the same sort of neanderthal advice without a seconds thought about a little thing called consequences. Every forum has guys like you. Sad really. People look to these forums to get good advice but are forced to try and decide who's knuckles still drag on the ground and who walks totally upright. As for the X-300 suggestion, the OP is in search of a NEW machine with a warranty, not some well-worn unit that someone else got the best years out of and is now dumping it. For a property the size stated and the tasks outlined, any decent LT will do the job. There's no need for him to own a garden tractor.

We live in Staten Island and just heard that the Community Gardens in Miller Field will not be planted this year due to contamination. There are sewage treatment plants and small stations in the beach areas. Oil from heaters leaked when they were turned over or floating down streets. I am very worried about what could be in the soil...Marist College had offered free soil testing and is no longer doing it. The salt water killed most of my mother in law's plants and shrubs and what survived is now covered with something - we don't know what it is. Perhaps it is some type of mold. I would be afraid of planting any type of garden with vegetables - I just read an article in today's paper that people are being told not to eat fruit from their fruit trees/fig trees if they survived, and not to eat anything like strawberries or herbs that may come up again. It is suggested that until you know what is in your soil, not to plant vegetables. I have a friend who had the air tested around her home and there were high levels of many different types of contaminants. We and a lot of other people are looking for a place that will test soil. Btw redteddy, I wish you luck in the Rockaways - I have been volunteering for nearly 6 months and have been sending donations to your area with many people here. I hope you recover quickly.

awm Thank you so much for checking on me! I haven't been on much because we are in recovery mode...It was a rough night when Sandy hit. We are near where one of the breaches occurred on Fire Island so we got slammed with waves and water. The good news is we survived! We got power back last Monday (had to have house rewired due to corrosion from the saltwater that flooded our basement-we even had fish and baby shrimp down there), heat last Friday because we had to put in all new vents and blowers. This morning I got a new refrigerator! I almost cried when it came because we've been living out of a cooler on the back deck since Sandy. The good news is we have a roof over our heads and heat and electric which so many others don't have. I am very greatful. The bad news is we have about $100,000 worth of damage so it will be awhile before we are back to pre-storm living. I am very sad for my neighbors-of the 12 or so houses on our street, only 4 of us are able to stay in our homes right now. We do the best we can to help each other out-even if it is just a hot cup of coffee or a hot shower for our friends who are cleaning out their houses of most of their belongings, or for the workmen who are gutting the houses to begin rebuilding. It was a very scary night-we didn't evacuate-won't do that again.

Thanks I will follow up with my State Farm agent on my home owner policy, I've had it with the same agent since 1977 (35 years) with exactly zero claims. Of course, that doesn't matter, I'll bet if I am covered my deductible is more than the book value - albeit my 16' aluminum fishing boat and motor were also damaged.

The DYT 4000 tractor or similar must sell new for under $1,500 and mine is 7 years old (low hours). The boat is even older, it dates back to 1985, the outboard to about 1995. Yep, all my stuff is old... me too.

I figure the insurance company has plenty of work and I'd give then some time to catch up. I took pictures of the tractor and boat to establish damage is due to falling trees.

You might want to notify your agent anyway to have the damage documented FOR him.
You could always tell him to put you on the bottom of the list.

When we came to North Carolina many years ago, you would go down to the county office and declare your belongings for the personal property tax. At that time my Sailboat was about 15 years old and still worth about 3k. You would walking to the clerks office she would as if you had any of the following going room by room. When it came to the boat, she would say do you have a boat?
ME Yes.
SHE How much is it worth?
ME: I dont know.
SHE Will make a guess.
ME Will what do you think a 15 year old sailboat without a motor is worth. It is in my garage at the house.
SHE Will the last guy had a sailboat that was worth about $200
ME Will that probably is reasonable for a 15 year old sailboat with out a motor.

Versions of this conversation were repeated every year until the state wised up and decided to tax personal property as a percentage of the house value.

If ya just want to get rid of those machines--here's what works for us land-lubbers!
Park the offending piece out front, with a for sale sign, and the price on it, and i guarantee it'll be gone before sun-up! Works for me! If it ain't gone in several days, then add "free" To the sign. If all else fails, load them up in yer pickemup, and bring them to my house. ;0) Rusty Jones

Nowadays, with the price of scrap steel, anything like that left outside will be picked up immediately for scrap. You can easily get $50 for a used rider.

When I'm at the yard, it's full of (seemingly homeless) people with shopping carts of stuff they picked off the sidewalk.
